Time Of Death

~An Original One-Shot~

A/N: This is a short story that I wrote for a piece of homework at school that I got good marks for, so I've decided to retype it here for all of you.

I couldn't stop as the flatlining tone ringed in my ears, forcing me to carry on. It was all on me, her life was in my hands. For a split-second, I looked up at the nurses whilst they injected the patient with the needed medication. I could tell by the look on their faces that this was the end. However, I refused to give up. This was solely my fault, it was me who promised her a full recovery, and now here I am, trying to keep her going into the light as my hands made her heart beat.

Just a day earlier, the same patient had walked into this hospital on her own two feet. A nurse showed her to a room then left me to check her over. Her hands were shaking, eyes unfocused, I could tell she was afraid.

"Will I be okay?" she asked me. As a doctor, I knew to always give a straight answer. Thoroughly, I checked her vitals, and they were good. I now knew what to say.

"You should make a full recovery, it isn't anything serious," I replied with a gentle smile.

I didn't expect things to change so quickly.

Thirty minutes slowly passed as I continued with the CPR. I incubated her, nothing changed. Shocked her, nothing changed. My own hands shook as I refused to stop. I had promised her a lifetime, I couldn't take it back now. However, no matter what I tried, she wouldn't breathe, her heart wouldn't beat.

I couldn't wake her up.

The nurse stepped forward and stared at the monitor. That flat line would never change again. "We need to call it," she told me. "She's gone."

My eyes widened with the realisation, I couldn't save her, she had lost her life the moment she collapsed. Slowly, I removed my hands and checked my watch.

With a heavy heart, I lowered my head and closed my eyes.

"Time of death, 23:46."
