Althought baptista wanted katherine to be married, he felt he had to tell petruchio that katherine was not shy and gentle at all. very sooon, petruchio had a chance to see how katherine relly was. katherine's music teacher rushed into the room to complain that katherine, his pupil, had hit him over the head with her lute because he had found fault with her playing.
When petruchio heard this, he said, "what an excellent lady! i love her more than ever and i am longing to talk to her." to make baptista agree to this quickly, he said, " i am in a hurry, sir. i can't come everyday to court your daughter. you knew my father. he is dead and has left me all his land and goods. tell me, if i win your daughter's love, what dowry will you give with her?"
Baptista thought that petruchio was rather rough for someone who was in love, but, because he wanted katherine to be married, he said " i will give twenty thousand crowns as a dowry, and half of what i own when i die." so it was quickly agreed that petruchio could marry katherine.
Baptista went to tell katherine that there was someone who wanted to marry her and send her to petruchio to listen to what he had to say.
Will was happening, petruchiowas deciding on the best way to speak to katherine . he said to himself " If she shouts at me , then I will tell her that she sings as sweetly as a bird , If she looks at me angrily at me then I will praise the beauty of her language . If she tells me to go away , then I will thank her as if she had asked me to stay with her for a week "
Katherine came into the room , and petruchio spoke to her .
" Good morning Kate, " he said " that's your name I think "
Katherine , not liking this greeting said " those who speak to me call me katherine "
" you are lying , " Said petruchio " you are called the plain kate , and pretty kate , you are the prettiest kate in the world , and so , kate, because I have heard your gentleness praised in every town , I have come to win you for my wife "
