katherine was the elder daughter of baptista, a rich gentleman who lived in padua. she was a lady with such an uncontrollable temper and such a loud and angry voice that she was known by everyone in padua as katherine the shrew. it seemed very unlikely, even impossible, that any man would ever want to marry her, so baptista was often criticised because he had refused to agree to many excellent offers of marriage that had been made to her gentle sister, bianca, saying that until katherine was married, he would not let bianca take a husband.                                                                                                                        However, a gentleman called petruchio came to padua to look for a wife and, not  being put off by what he had heard about katherine's temper, and knowing that she was rich and beautiful, he was determined to marry the famous shrew and to turn her into a gentle wife who would obey him .                  No one was more suitable to do this dificult job than petruchio. He was as spirited as katherine. and was an amusing and good-natured man. He was clever and wise, and how knew to pretend to be angry when relly he was so calm that he could have laughed at his own show of angriness; relly, he was carless and easy-going. The rough way in wich he behaved when he was married to katherine was the only way to overcome katherine's behaviour .                                                                                          So petruchio went to baptista and asked him for premission to court his gentle (as he said) daughter katherine. he said that he had heard of her shy and gentle behaviour and had came from verona to try to make her love him .
