"THIS PLAYLIST SUCKS." I made a face as I hung up an ornament on the Christmas tree Dakota and I were setting up.It was a Saturday morning and the two of us had woken up surprisingly hangover free even though she'd had too much wine to drink while at dinner with her family while I'd had vodka at the club with Jack the previous night.
As soon as I woke up, I tried to call Alek but he hadn't picked up. I went to jump in the shower after that to help myself wake up and when I got out of the shower, the warm scent of freshly-baked cookies had drawn me downstairs after I'd thrown on a pair of leggings and a collared cropped brown sweatshirt.
My eyes had lit up when I found out that not only was Dakota baking gingersnaps, but she was also setting up a fake tree in the living room since Christmas was two weeks away.
"It's Christmas music! How does it suck?" The strawberry blonde scowled playfully from the other side of the tree where she was hanging up ornaments as well.
"These are all the sucky Christmas songs."
I knew Dakota was rolling her eyes. "If you have a better playlist, by all means– you're welcome to play it Miss I'm-picky-about-Christmas-music."
The truth was I was only being picky because this was my only chance to make everything feel perfect. My dad and I never celebrated the holidays anymore– especially Christmas, since it had been my mom's favorite holiday. Dad still took her death hard even though it had happened over four years ago and seeing decorations and lights up in his own home was unbearable to him.
This was my first time actually getting festive since my mom died and so I wasn't gonna let the chance to make everything feel magical slide by lightly.
"Fuck, I forgot my phone upstairs." I realized after searching the area we'd claimed for ourselves and the tree in the living room. "I probably left it in your room– I'm gonna go grab it and when I come back, I'm playing the real shit."
"Yeah, yeah," Dakota brushed off with a smile as I left the room and went upstairs, taking the steps up two at a time.
When I got upstairs, I started towards Dakota's room but my eyes quickly caught Jordan walking out of the bathroom with nothing but a towel wrapped around his hips. His defined body had my lips parting in shock and the water dribbling down his abs made me forget how to breathe.
I right about choked when I saw that he was holding my phone in his hand and was looking down at the screen as if he was answering a FaceTime call on it.
"Listen, I wasn't gonna answer the call for her," He was saying to my phone as he moved his wet hair out of his eyes. "But you've called her five times now so why don't you give it a rest. It's pathetic."
