It was impossible to see anything. The glasses were designed in a way to prevent anything from peeking through the corners. The environment combined with the special equipment resulted in complete darkness.
All they could do was to trust what their guide would say and move accordingly.
"Ok, be careful. You're reaching the corner of the hallway, step forward two more times then you gotta turn to the left." She explained through the speaker.
"This way?" She asked for confirmation. The anxiety was noticeable from the voice alone, "Am I doing fine?"
Nobody was used to walking blindly without the fear of tripping and hurting yourself in the process.
"Yeah, yeah! You're doing great. Don't panic I won't let you crush into a wall."
She extended her wings forward and touched the wall covered in silk. "I know, I'm sorry. I don't really feel comfortable that is all..."
The silk wasn't just preventing light from coming in but also ruining any attempt of remembering their position by touching the surface.
"Esmeralda, can I ask you something?"
She wasn't in the mood to correct her, "sure. Your name... Laila was it?"
"That's correct, yes. I'm surprised you remember me. We haven't talked much before."
She disliked small talk more than anything in that moment. The only thing she wanted to focus on was the challenge. "Where do I go now?"
"Walk forward in the direction you're looking at right now." The bear said before continuing her speech, "It's about yesterday."
She was doing her best to not think about it and her leader had to bring it up, "does it have to be that? Let's talk about something else, ok?"
"I wanted to help you, I'm sorry if I sounded nosy. That's the main reason why I asked you to be my partner."
"Didn't you ask for Mark? Please don't lie."
"I knew Mark would say no. I thought you'd also say no and that, maybe, seeing me refused once would convince you to agree instead."
Her awkwardness shifted into anger, "I can't believe this. I feel so stupid right now." She accepted out of kindness. Esmeralda legitimately felt bad for her and literally offered Laila her most genuine concern and yet it was crushed, stepped on in front of her. "You're cold."
"No, Esmeralda that wasn't the point I-"
"I'm touching the wall with my wings. Where do I go? Hurry." Esmeralda quickly changed the subject when the opportunity showed itself.
Laila sighed, feeling like she ruined her chances to give her that closure she needed. "On the right..."
The floor violently shook and a loud crush followed it. "What was that?!"
"I'm not sure... maybe?" Laila quickly checked the map, "it's in the same direction where one of the tokens is."
"Ok, I'm gonna start walking there then."
"Alright..."
The swan could hear multiple voices the more she walked forward.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!" He pleaded.
"You didn't mean to?! You were clearly running! That's the only reason why you managed to shove me inside the wall!" The other voice argued back.
"What's going on?" Esmeralda asked, getting closer to them.
