Chapter 2

Mistress Ethelind is a kind and caring woman, with many attractive attributes. The way she fusses when I call her by a title, makes me want to break into a smile. But I can't. I was not made to feel emotions or feelings or to react to them.

When she gave me a name, I felt something in my chest begin to bloom, but as soon as it took root, something squashed it down and the feeling vanished from all thought. Not many automatons are given a name by their masters and mistresses. I am part of the few who have been given a human name and now it makes me seem even more a part of my mistress's life.

She spoke to me about all the things she needed and wanted me to do, but I have come to realise she hasn't asked for as much as she could've. She also told me I am to accompany her to her work every day and to escort her home in the evening. Her schedule states that she could be home by seventeen hundred, but she told me she comes home at least twenty one hundred. I do not mind the late hours, however, I do worry that my mistress gets very little sleep.

This enforces my need to ensure food is on the table in under an hour, that the house is cleaned while she sleeps and that the garden is watered every morning while she eats breakfast. Weeding and such will be left for the weekend because my mistress usually works from home on those two days. Still, I feel I am not doing enough to take a burden off her shoulders. My mistress is stressed beyond reason, so I am hoping that tomorrow when I go to her place of work, I might find other ways to help my mistress overcome her stress.

While she sleeps, I walk around the three-bedroom cottage-like house and learn where everything is kept. My mistress has some of the latest technologies and so I am pleased to learn I was programmed to understand how each one works. Mistress Ethelind didn't say much about what she does for a living, but one can guess she has a high paying job and that she might be working on some big projects for one of Henry Abraham's companies. I guess that she is either an engineer, scientist or biologist. Those are the highest paying jobs in the world at the moment.

I certainly look forward to working with my mistress on one of her many projects.
