To Be So Lonely - Harry Styles
The next few days passed by a blur, with not much that's worth noting occurring, and before Alex knew it he was walking to his next dance session. He doesn't think the first one could be considered much of a session though.
Either way, he was determined to not make a fool of himself this time.
The studio was no longer intimidating to him, it was still unfamiliar, but at least he had less nerves than the last time.
Alex always liked to dance, of course none of it was ever serious. However, he definitely liked to move about. Whether it be mindlessly flinging his limbs around at a club, or just shimmying to the songs in his Spotify playlist in his dorm, he'd always found some sort of relief from it. It only seemed natural for him to join the dance club at his Uni. Besides, was always one for the creatives.
He stepped in the studio and saw a few familiar faces around, some nodded to acknowledge him while others just blatantly ignored him. The mirrors that lined one of the walls made the space seem much larger and more crowded than it was. The lights were yellow, which Alex hated. He always preferred artificial white lights.
Damien had already explained to him that he'd be paired with someone so that he doesn't struggle with keeping up with the sessions.
"So, who's supposed to be my partner?" Alex asked Damien. Being paired with someone he doesn't know unsettled him, but he knew it would be for the best.
"Well I still haven't picked anyone out, but I'm sure someone will volunteer."
The thought of no one wanting to help him didn't sit quite right with Alex, which Damien noticed and quickly added- "If no one does, I'll pair up with ya." He offers with a lopsided smile, which Alex appreciated.
"Why can't you pair up with me now though?"
"Well, it'll be difficult for me to teach the whole group while simultaneously trying to help ya get into the rhythm of things won't it?"
"I guess, yeah." Alex agrees.
As soon as everyone had arrived at the studio, Damien announced that Alex would be needing some help. Almost everyone looked their way, the unneeded attention made Alex fluster. Damien continued to explain why he needed help, and Alex suddenly found the tips of his shoes far more interesting to look at than the people around him.
Why is this being announced anyway?
He hoped that at least Will would want to help him, but when he caught a glimpse of him he was smirking. Alex was dumbfounded.
Will nodded towards his side and Alex saw George walking up towards him and Damien.
So that was his plan, get George to volunteer to help so that Alex would embarrass himself in front of him. Too bad that Alex was planning on doing fantastic. He definitely did not want to give Will the satisfaction of seeing him be humiliated.
"Hey mate, how are you?" Alex hated the way his cheeks flushed at the simple greeting. "Good, how've you been yourself?" He rubbed his face with his sleeve in a desperate attempt to hide its tint. "Good, good." George replied, "I'm willing to help you by the way." Alex coughed, "Uh, yeah. Uhm, thank you."
Jesus, what the fuck was that. Judging by the puzzled look on his face, George seemed to be thinking the same thing.
"So, George!" Damien interrupted, Alex had never been more thankful for him, "We're gonna do the same choreography from last week, just make sure he does alright."
"Will do."
Alex wondered if George was always this monotone.
As the speakers turned on, the sound flooded the room from the bottom up, Alex vaguely remembers hearing it somewhere before. Probably at a club while getting shit-faced, thinks.
"D'you want me to show the choreography first? You can follow after."
"Uh, sure?"
"Just watch me then." George got into position and Alex watched from behind. He hopes it isn't too difficult.
Don't blame me for falling,
I was just a little boy-
George's movements were elegant and fluid, every small motion thought out.
Don't blame the drunk caller
Wasn't ready for it all
While hugging himself, he slid to his right on the balls of his feet.
You can't blame me, darling
Not even a little bit
He came to a slow stop and looked at Alex, a hint of a smirk painted on his lips. He shimmyed his shoulders in time with the ukulele. Alex doesn't know how he never realised how bright George's eyes were.
And I'm just an arrogant son of a bitch
Who can't admit when he's sorry
He jumped from one foot, spun and landed on the other. He flung his arms back and tipped his head. He looked at Alex again from the corner of his eye and his smirk grew; Alex felt his face burn.
Don't call me 'baby' again
You got your reasons
I know you're tryna be friends
I know you mean it-
Alex wasn't really paying attention to what steps came after, too mesmerized by George for anything to register in his brain. He thought the man resembled a god of sorts, too divine for him to be witnessing this. The ambient light only added to Alex's theory, giving George an ethereal glow around him.
All too soon Alex heard the music stop, and only noticed now that his jaw was slack. He quickly shut his mouth before anyone (by anyone he means George, but that's irrelevant) could notice.
"You expect me to be able to do that?" Alex spoke up after managing to find his voice.
"I mean, it's not too difficult. If someone with," George coughs and air quotes "A shite memory can do it, I'm sure so can you." He teased Alex.
"Right. Sorry about that, by the way." He looked away from George, scared that he had actually offended him. Until he heard a laugh.
"'S alright mate."
"O-Okay." Alex still refused to meet his eye. "We should probably continue with the dance."
"Sure thing."
