That night, Oliver took Clarissa with him to Anthony's, where he spent half his earned money on food.
"What are you going to do with it?" Clarissa asked curiously.
"Whenever I get paid for a job, I come here, buy supplies, and give them out to the poor people I pass on the street."
"That's... extremely kind."
"I have reasons for doing it."
He obviously didn't want to talk about it, so Clarissa didn't push. His past was a jumble of starvation, hiding in corners, and making himself fit in order to come out on top. Oliver was naturally a selfless person. He stole to help people who couldn't help themselves.
"I'm really sorry for whatever happened to you out there."
"It's like you said, don't be sorry for something that's not your fault."
Clarissa nodded, and they went out handing boxes and cans to anyone they saw. Oliver had only spent five hundred Para, so they still had five hundred left. When everything had been given out, three hours had passed.
Oliver used the money from his guard's pockets to buy them one fruit each. Clarissa didn't complain, which surprised him, since she had lived in a palace.
She must have noticed his expression because she said, "I must have been trained not to require too much food, because most days I'm not hungry. Unless I haven't had a donut in a month."
"What's a donut?" Oliver asked.
Clarissa's jaw dropped, like he had committed some unspeakable crime. "Is there a sweets shop here?"
"Yeah, but I've only looked, I never bought or stole anything from there."
"Where is it?"
Oliver led Clarissa to the sweet shop, where they spent the remaining guard's money on two round shaped things with a hole in the middle. They appeared to be covered in something shiny.
"Come on, come on, try it!" Oliver bit into the "donut" and found himself in heaven. The thing was still hot, so the shiny stuff was a little melted. The donut seemed to sing as he swallowed and took another bite.
"Isn't it wonderful!" Clarissa's smile was huge as she took in his expression.
"This thing... is awesome. I could eat this for the rest of my life and never grow tired of it!"
"I know!" Clarissa bit her donut and swayed in her seat.
"Can I get you two anything else?" a server had come to their table.
"No, but this, this... donut?" he questioned and Clarissa nodded. "It's amazing! I've never had anything like it!"
"Take two more! On the house!" the server left.
"What does "on the house" mean?" Oliver asked, not really caring.
"It means we get two more for free." Clarissa was licking her fingers, already having finished her donut.
Oliver looked down at his half-eaten donut, then finished it in two bites.
Clarissa laughed. "Happy now?"
"I haven't lived until today!" what else had he missed out on?
The server returned with two more donuts.
"Could you bring us a box please? I would like to save mine." Clarissa told the server.
"Of course. Would you like a box as well sir?" Oliver nodded.
Once they boxed their donuts and returned to Oliver's temporary home, Clarissa asked the question that had probably been bothering her since they left the assassin's home.
"So, who's the guy with the cat?"
"He's just a guy who I sometimes do jobs for. Pretty serious stuff. His voice sounded different today, maybe he has a voice box."
Clarissa nodded. "What did he mean, everything will be explained?"
"I don't know."
"So, I'm confused. I know that assassins... kill people. But who? And why?"
"They're like me. They get paid to do what they're good at."
Clarissa was silent.
"The dream you had this morning, was it..."
"The one I told the assassin about, yes. I've had it every single night for as long as I can remember." she laid down on her sleeping bag. "Goodnight, Oliver."
"Goodnight." Oliver had a feeling that neither of them would be sleeping tonight.
