{#17: the consequences}

Tauris p.o.v.:

My wound had healed completely in les than one night. I'm pretty sure that was a new record. This was all very strange. And had the whole point of yesterday not been to hide the fight from Richard I would be asking him for counsel right now. But as my pride did not allow that, here I am in my study doing research in the hopes of finding something relevant.

The only cases I knew were vampires could heal faster was because of the presence of a mate. Mates were rare, elusive I had never even met a mated pair in all my years. And Marcus believed it all to be utter bullshit. For a long time I believed them to be no more than legends but then again when one is a mythical creature themselves isn't that disbelieve slightly misplaced? I know that it is common believe that mates live in the same centurie. Well if I had to believe my books there was no example known of finding a mate in another centurie. And for vampires it was even rarer as our lives are cut short, and most of us live the first decades in servitude to our makers. From the legends I remember that most matings happend centuries after being turned and very rarely between a vampire and another kind. The reason therefor; once mate only lives once -duch- and usually they are born in the same centurie.

"Tauris! Where are you?" Richard jelled as I heard doctor Zacharel's car ride away. My god how long was I busy doing research?

"I'm in my study." I answered wondering what he thought I was doing.

"Tauris you have to do something for me ..."

"Yes Richard what is it you want?" I asked as he stopped mid sentence.

"Why do you smell like human? Why do you smell like doctor Zacharel's daughter? Did you feed off a human? From a minor? How dare you? I'll kill you myself." Richard jelled and was about to lunge for me.

"Richard it is nothing like that. You know I would never do that. I would die, before feeding from a human against there will once more." I jelled in return. I myself was loosing my temper. How dared he suspect me from doing such a thing.

"Well do explain to me why you smell like you feasted upon a mortal then." Richard huffed. " You reek as if you took a bath in her blood!"

"I was hurt..." I hesitated wondering why I had to go trough al this trouble just to tell him now. Just my luck.

"I am waiting." Richard said impatient.

"I got into a fight with one of those stupid dogs. He broke our rules. So we got into a fight and he bit me."

"You were bitten?" Richard was not only surprised I could detect worrie in his voice as well.

"It was an accident, he got lucky. The coward ran after I broke one of his legs and his cheekbone."

"That still does not explain why the hell you smell like True."

"When we were working on the assignment yesterday I fainted. True saw the wound and forced me to go with her so her mother could take care of it. The doctor gave me some shots and concluded that I had an infection and was suffering from severe blood loss. So she gave me a blood transfusion. It appears that the blood-pack was her daughters blood. That's why I smell like True."

"Wy would the good doctor have here daughters blood lying around? And simply give you a blood-transfusion. Don't take me for a fool boy." Richard was really losing his patience here.

"Well it turns out that True has her own dark past. She was addicted to some heavy painkillers a few years ago. I don't know what exactly because her mom sort of blocked those thoughts. It was like they don't allow themselves to remember. I have never seen this with a human before. Whatever happened was bad her mother has a sort of bank-safe in her office to keep True out and away from the medication.

"My god, she's barely 17 what could have happened to her to be so desperate to end it all?" Richard stated.

"From the flashes I got out of her mothers mind I saw sleep deprivation because of terrible night terrors. I'm planning to do some research about it. Maybe I'll try to find the doctor that treated her for it and try to have a look in her file."

"How mush of her blood did she give you?"

"Half a pack, why?"

"Because you are healing extremely fast. I can barely smell the poison in your blood. How compatible was her blood to yours?"

"I wouldn't know. All I can tell you is that the wound already healed and that the smell of the cold packs drove me nearly insane. I had to bread trough my mouth to surprise my reactions. And we both know that I have extraordinary controle over my baser instincts."

"And this was bagged blood? How did you even smell it? We have bagged blood here for me all the time, you have never smelled it." Richard was wondering out loud.

"It's probably some vampire thing."

"Don't be naive Tauris!" Richard scoffed and looked around at the mess I was making of my office. "You're looking for an explanation, aren't you. So tell me what have you come up with so far?"

"The only reason for an abnormal accelerated healing with vampires, that could find, are ..." I hesitated I didn't want to sound ridiculous tot Richard.

"Go ahead say it out loud."

"Mates, that's all I could find so far. But it can't be, it's impossible. I was born more than two centuries ago. How could that be? No, vampire I know found his or her mate later than one century after their birth."

"I have no idea, but if what you say is true, then it is. The fact that you are healing this fast ... there is but one explanation." Richard said thoughtful.

"Richard you know I would never ..."

"Never what? You have time Tauris! First, you are getting to the bottom of this. We aren't going to draw hasty conclusions. Even if we both know the true deep down. We have to be more than 100% sure. Lives are at stake." Richard said determined and walked away.
