I SIDESTEP AWAY from Tyler who jogs behind me

I SIDESTEP AWAY from Tyler who jogs behind me. "Ty, not now," I say, slamming my locker shut. It's broken and greying but that is just how everything is on Elara: pale, cracking and dying.

Christina fluffs her hair and shakes her head at us. "You two should get a room, honestly," she says, making an obscene gesture with her hands that can only be interpreted as disgusting and crude.

"Ew!" Ty and I say together. He looks repulsed and annoyed. I totally get his expression: it is mirroring mine. We look at each other in horror before turning away.

"That's not happening," I say, walking beside Christina, who is busy rolling her eyes.

"Sure, keep lying. I have another class but I am telling you, William's going to have Ty's head on a spike by the end of this year."

She winks and pops a mint into her mouth, chewing it slowly. She is trying to morph her face seductively but ends up looking like a goldfish caught in 40,000W headlights.

We shake our heads at her 'no' and she pouts before sashaying away to her next class, her red hair flying like fire behind her. She throws up a peace sign and I smile at her retreating form. I am glad I have her by my side, I think randomly before I start walking again.

"I told you I'm sorry, really, honestly. You know I'd never get you in trouble for anything."

We halt to a stop when a girl swings open her locker dangerously. He runs a troubled hand through his ebony hair, the same colour as mine and I catch myself looking at him for a few seconds too long.

I jerk my head away and push past the noisy locker girl. I heave my backpack on my shoulder and turn. I start walking ahead, Tyler falling into step beside me. I can see he is still flustered but it won't hurt to trouble him a little more, now, would it?

Rounding a corner, I can feel his aquamarine eyes on me but I continue to ignore him. "Thea, please, I'm sorry," he says, emphasising. "I crossed a line with my comment on William and I realise that now, okay? Just talk to me, will you? Even if it's to curse me." He pouts silently and a small smirk plays on my lips.

"Look, I'm not forgetting this, okay? Quit trying," I say. I can feel a giggle rise up inside me, threatening to spoil the fun. I quickly suppress it and press my lips in a thin line.

"That's not even fair. For Hades' sake, just listen to me. I said a few mean," he gulps when I stare him down, daring him. "Okay fine, I said a lot of mean comments about you and William in the past. I did it again today. I'm sorry. It's just that I miss having you around."
