This is it.
Today is the day(or night) He, Keiko and Hannah would escape. He had lost track of time since he was taken to this dark, cold room. He was almost sad to be leaving the place where he met Keiko, and then Hannah. They had become best friends, and could communicate with each other through telepathy. The guards and Monster-soldiers made their rounds each day and night. He assumed a week or two has passed since Keiko told them the plan. He could still remember how weak he suddenly became when he lit his finger to see the map. He gave his share of food to Hannah, and was getting weaker and weaker. He never showed it, but he guessed Keiko knew. This probably gave her even more a reason to escape. They had a connection, he being a fire mutant and she a water one, they cancelled each other's powers out. When their powers combined, it was like a solar flare joined forces with a tsunami. They cared for Hannah together.
He hadn't seen sunlight for years and years.
The guards knew his strength came from light, and this was one of the reasons they turned the lights off.
Before him, Keiko never needed the lights off because it made no difference to her.
Keiko thrived in darkness.
That was one of the reasons he admired her.

Leo woke up, and found Keiko lying awake. Her thoughts were racing with excitement and urgency. Hey, mind if I look at what you've figured out so far?
Keiko replied, Be my guest.
All at once, Leo saw all the plans and routes and ideas she'd had that night.
Should we wake Hannah?
You wake her.
Leo shook her awake. Hannah knew exactly what was happening.
They would sneak out.
Hannah slowly and silently lifted the metal chair while Leo opened the vent that snaked its way around the facility. They grabbed their rations and gobbled them up as quietly as possible as to not alert the guards waiting outside the door. Once they all were inside the vent, they were surprised at how large the vent canals were. They weren't squished like they had planned. They prayed that nothing else was different than what they had planned. As soon as Keiko made the signal, Hannah was able to play a lethal frequency on the intercoms. They heard the guards scream in agony as their ears were destroyed from the inside out. She also made the lights fizzle out in the entire facility, and they were screaming and stumbling in darkness. Keiko started laughing at how clumsily they fled in the dark. Now they know how we felt. Well, minus the ear problems.
They were lucky the vents were soundproof, but the screams were heard through the steel.
Leo knew how much Keiko has been longing for this day, but he had to remind her to keep moving. The sooner we get out of this place, the better.
They kept crawling, Keiko leading the way since she knew the facility's layout better than he and Hannah did.
Suddenly, a blinding light struck them, and Keiko pushed hard on the vent leading to the outside world.
The Vent clanked, and they jumped out.
