Melody~

"Are you sure you'll be okay, Mel?" My mother asked.

"She's seventeen. We can leave for a weekend and she'll be fine." My father assured her.

She sighed. "Alright then." She turned to me. "Don't forget to take care of the dog and lock the doors."

I nodded. "I won't forget. Love you guys."

My mom pulled me in for a fifth goodbye hug and my father gave me a reassuring nod.

They walked outside into howling wind of the night. I waved goodbye to them from the porch as they pulled out of the driveway.

I went back into the house, making sure to lock the door behind me. For the first time, I was actually home alone.

Odd of me to say, since I'm seventeen.

The house was incredibly quiet. The silence itself bored me. It wasn't silent for long.

I heard a thud from the back of the house. Was it just in my head?

It had to be. I was just nervous about being home alone for the first time.

I ignored it and went up the stairs to my room. I laid on my bed turned on my phone. There was a missed call from Michael.

I dialed his number and raised my phone to my ear. It rang for a few moments before he picked up on the other end.

"Did they leave?" He asked.

"Yeah, they're gone."

"Look at you! Being all adulty and shit." He joked.

"Yeah, I know. I've never been home alone before." I said. "It's kind of fucking with me."

He breathed out a laugh. "Really? How so?"

I heard the thud from the back of the house again. "There it goes again..."

"What?" He asked.

"I keep hearing noises from the back of the house. I'm trying to ignore it but it's freaking me the hell out."

He chuckled into the phone. "You want me to come over? I can protect you from the monsters." He joked.

I laughed. "You are the monster."

"Yeah. The monster in your bed."

I scoffed. "Michael!"

"I'm kidding!" He laughed. "You can't take a joke?"

I rolled my eyes. He would always say things like that to get under my skin.

Yes, he was undeniably attractive and charming, but he was just my friend.

"You know I don't see you like that." I said.

He sighed. "I know, Mel. I was just playing."

I quickly changed the subject. "The house is so quiet. I'm used to having my parents around. This is so boring!" I complained.

"This is when you have the most fun! Throw a party or something." He said.

I shook my head. "That's a terrible idea. With my luck, my parents would decide to come home early and they'd find they're house in a wreck."

He sucked his teeth. "You're so boring."

I scoffed at him before jumping at the sound of another thud.

"Shit." I said. "I don't think being alone is for me."

"You're not alone. You have Charlie." He said.
