Today’s story is dedicated to one of my close friends who has struggled with depression in the past. Some of this story is completely made up by me, including parts with major loss, though I myself have lost people close to me, its because of her that I chose to write a horror story based off of mental illness. If you know someone who is going through depression, do your best to support them! It’s tough, going through hard times, but the best way to help them is by supporting them! Quick warning before we begin, this story includes messages on tough topics including depression and suicide, so please be prepared. Oh, one more thing. This story is also slightly based on my own experience with depression. The creature in this story is how I view depression. Thank you!
Most horror stories are about monsters and ghouls, killers and ghosts, the supernatural and the paranormal. However, this story is about something very real.
Have you ever asked yourself what is the point? Why do we live only to die? Why should I fight when it always ends the same? Have you ever wondered why we exist if only to disappear one day. The truth is, there is something out there that is scarier than any make belief monster could ever be. Most stories are based off of reality, just like this one.
Our story starts with a highschool student named Kate. Who is Kate, you ask? She is the focus of this story. The truth is she has never encountered a ghost, nor has she been attacked by a serial killer. Her story is about mental illness, and the hardship she’s had to face. And though some of this story might seem like something out of a supernatural horror story, the other half is about something that is very real.
Kate is not new to losing people she loves. Her best friend died in a car crash, and ever since she’s been struggling with moving on. She still can’t believe her best friend is gone, after all, only a few days earlier did the two go to a movie together.
She’s not gone, she just moved away or something… She can’t be gone, can she?
Kate continuously repeated that in her head, but deep down she knew her friend was gone forever. She had seen the wreckage with her own eyes. She had seen the officers pulling out three body bags. She even helped identify them, but she kept trying to convince herself that it wasn’t real. She told herself it was all just a bad dream and she would eventually wake up, and her friend would be there, by her side, asking if she was ok. She would explain the dream to her and her friend would comfort her, telling her it was just a dream and she was still there, right by Kate’s side. But no matter how many times Kate woke up, her friend was still gone, and the nightmare would never end.
One night, Kate heard a sound coming from her closet, and when she looked over, she saw red eyes, watching her, staring deep into her soul. The closet door slowly closed shut, and her room was empty once more. This continued happening every night for about a week, until one day, the closet was empty once more. It was silent for around three nights. Then, one night, Kate woke up to the sound of crying coming from under her bed. It started out as a quiet sob, barely audible, then it got louder and loud. Kate had to cover her head with a pillow to block the sound, but even then she would barely get a few hours of rest each night.
However, it didn’t stop there. One night, Kate felt something reaching towards her whilst the weeping got louder. As soon as she looked behind her, the weeping stopped and she saw nothing was there. All was quiet since then for about a week, and Kate became hopeful that the events were over.
It wasn’t over.
She woke up in the middle of the night to a loud thud. Her eyes landed on a strange creature. It’s entire body was black, and it was very tall. The only features she could make out was a pair of red eyes and blood red tears leaking from them. Kate was paralyzed, terrified by the monster before her. The room was completely silent, the air becoming cold and empty.
“W-Who are you?” Kate asked. The creature stayed silent, but moved his hand to point to its chest. “Your heart?” She asked, thinking. “Do you also feel empty like me?” She continued. The creature nodded its head. “Did… Did I create you?” She asked. Once again, the creature nodded. “So, what do you want from me?” She asked. The creature pointed to the window. “You want me to come with you?” She asked. It nodded. She slowly got up, and the creature led her to the window. She opened it and looked out. “Lead the way.” She said. The creature nodded, reaching out its hand, and she took it. Slowly, she climbed out the window, and just like that she was never seen alive again.
