Previously: "We thought we were in the clear." Molly told the authorities sadly.
Now:
Taking their time, walking. Jack cut the silence, "Man if i ever have to run again, it'll be too soon."
Time seemed to slow down. Everyone became hyper-aware in that moment. It came out of nowhere. Striking only one, and that was it. They did not attack further, just leaving the group to deal with their pain. She repeated it many times. "It's okay." They surrounded her, none knowing the right kind of information to save her.
"I lived my life dearies, it's okay. I'll be with my Tommy again."
They all cried. Molly led the group now, with max. While River and Jack carried their beloved Birdie back to what was left of her home. They reached her home at sundown. They buried her next to Tommy, and said their goodbyes. As they did so, they slept in one of the many trees River pointed out. They woke up early the next day. Passing the field of flowers, none of them were alive. All withering away. They made as little stops as possible, on their trek back. There wasn't much conversation amongst the group. Only River telling Max about the creatures that lurked in the forest or informing Molly of any wrong turns she'd make. Jack carried a tired Max on his back. And Molly carried Birdie's death on hers.
10 days. That's how long it took them to reach Mollys home. Each member still together in attempts to make sure everyone is safe.
"Sorry it took so long Miss. Sarah, Molly makes a lot of wrong turns." Everyone laughed at Jack's attempt to brighten the mood.
