(semi) important a/n at the end of this chapter
Tap. Tap. Tap.
The sound of her shoes on pavement was a steady, comforting rhythm that provided a refreshing feeling of productiveness. (Y/N) takes out her phone and smiles upon seeing messages from Mae.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
It honestly seemed pointless to attend school on a Friday after two consecutive absences, but social creature as she was, the girl craved company. Even to the point of setting an extremely early alarm.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
On second thought, maybe she wasn't all that social. Maybe she was just lonely.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
"(Y/N)-chan!"
And suddenly, the Miya twins are next to (Y/N), both clad in a black shirt and maroon shorts.
"Hey," Osamu greets, "haven't seen ya in awhile. Are ya okay now?"
"M-Mhm!" (Y/N) replies, quickly recovering from the shock of their sudden appearance, "Uh...what are you guys doing here so early in the morning?"
"Our team's on a run," Atsumu peeks over the girl's shoulder, "Ne, why were ya smilin' at yer phone just now?"
"Just texting a friend!" (Y/N) shoves her phone inside her schoolbag, to which the blonde raises an eyebrow.
"Oh? Is this perhaps the boyfriend ya said didn't exist?" he smirks.
"No! Mae's just a friend."
"Mae?" Atsumu cocks his head, "I don't think I've ever met a boy named Mae at our school."
"She's a girl."
"Oh. From your class?"
I don't like where this is going. "No, she's not from my class."
"Ohh! Yer from America, right? Is she from America too?"
"Y-yeah..." Please don't press anymore, please don't press anymore-
Luckily, Osamu notices his classmate's uncomfortableness, "Oi 'Tsumu, quit botherin' her."
"Ehhh!? I am not! (Y/N)-chan, I'm not bothering ya, am I?" Before he could be given an answer, the agitated boy is interrupted by a firm hand to his shoulder. With a jump, he turns to face the ever intimidating captain: "K-Kita-san!"
(Y/N) giggles as she witnesses the twins get chewed out by their stoic upperclassman. Other members of the volleyball club arrive and some start snickering from behind the scenes. Minutes later, (Y/N) is watching the boys resume their run when a heavy hand plops onto her head. She grins as she side-eyes its origin, "Good morning Sunarin~"
"Hey."
"Haha, you're not gonna follow your team?"
Suna ruffles the girl's hair and places his index on top his growing smirk, "Shh...I'd rather just walk with you for a bit."
"Woah~ Did someone miss me?"
"I don't feel like running," the boy defends.
(Y/N) smiles, "Well, I might've missed my favorite seat-mate, y'know."
Suna huffs and begins to walk forward, the girl quick to follow. The sky was a light, cloudless blue, the breeze blew cool against their faces, and a comfortable silence filled the air. Though he was well aware of the inevitable lecture to come later, Suna felt oddly at peace. But why? Why did he stay to walk with the girl, even while knowing of the consequences? What was this feeling of serenity tugging at the back of his being? Tired of the thinking, he glances over at his company. Due to his height, what first caught his eye were the stray, (H/C) pieces of (Y/N)'s hair flying around, seeming to glow under the sun. Suna mindlessly stretches out a hand to pat them against her head, earning a giggle from its owner. The boy can't help but grin lazily. Over such a short amount of time, he'd grown quite used to "petting" Smiley.
"It seems you like playing with hair, Sunarin~" she comments, as if sucking the thoughts from his mind.
"Yours is soft," he shrugs back.
"Ah, really?" her laugh is a light twinkle, "That's nice to know."
The two fall into another silence. Suna peeks over at (Y/N) from time to time. She sported such a look of tranquility. From this angle, he got a perfect view of her lashes and the sun's highlights on her nose and cheekbones. Though he still couldn't grasp why he chose to walk with her, Suna didn't regret it. Well it's the team's fault for leaving me behind, he chose to tell himself.
Minutes later, the pair find themselves at the school gym, where of course, the club is already in waiting. After quite the earful, Suna continues his morning practice while (Y/N) is allowed to watch quietly from the bleachers.
Suna walks out of the changing rooms, ready to head to class. Glancing around, he spots (Y/N) leaning against a wall and typing away on her phone, a small smile gracing her features. Suna walks over and drops his hand on her head, "Oi, Smiley, did you really forget about me?"
"Ah!" the girl drops her phone at the sudden movement.
Suna bends over to pick up the device and hands it back, chuckling as the girl's mouth turns into a pout. Shown on the screen were texts indecipherable to him accompanied by a whirlwind of emojis. "Hey, is this in English?"
"It is."
Suna eyes the girl, "You're from America, right?"
Oh no. This again-? "Yeah, haha, Atsumu actually asked me the exact same thing earlier."
Suna couldn't stop his curiosity from seeping out. "If you don't mind me asking...why're you here in Japan?"
The girl momentarily freezes, a wry smile crawling up her features, "Because...because that place sucks~!" Avoiding eye-contact and eager to change the subject, her gaze flickers around, coincidentally ending up on his uniform, "Oh. Sunarin, your tie's undone."
"Huh-" Heat creeps up the boy's cheeks as (Y/N) gently takes ahold of the red necktie.
"Oh shoot, sorry! Uhhh, can I?" Ah, am I being too eager to switch the conversation?
Her expression was so innocent, Suna couldn't say 'no.' "S-sure."
She grins like a child given candy as she works and finishes the knot. "There we go!"
Suna looks away. What was this girl playing at?
"C'mon, let's go!"
Tap. Tap. Tap.
"'Samu! Do ya see that?" Atsumu calls out, prompting his brother to look ahead.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Suna and (Y/N) were walking towards the school building. The Miya watches as the girl giggles at something, which causes Suna to glance down at her laughing form. Only a second later, he averts his gaze and shuffles his tie. Besides whatever stunt his friend just pulled, Osamu could say with confidence that the two looked very relaxed, and their footsteps were mesmerizingly in sync.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Suna and (Y/N)-chan, huh... "Yeah. I do."
Tap. Tap. Tap.
