I peered into the mirror. What I saw was a ghastly reflection of what was supposed to be me staring right back. "you... Are tired." it spouted.
I found myself replying. "You should see the size of the bags holding up your eyes, you look worse." I retorted. The skin tone of the guy in the mirror was like that of a corpse, I could feel, see the cold emanating from his skin without having to exert my senses. And yet, he dared to judge me.
"Yes, we can see that." Was all he said in a voice that was void of any sound, so low yet so audible. Almost as if I was speaking to my ears.
"We know what I'm talking about. You are tired, deep down.
.. Beneath those eyes, you are dying for help and you don't know it, your soul is reaching out but you're ignoring it.""I never thought your insanity had this much magnitude." I walked away, getting ready to start my day.
Same routine as always. Wake up, do the chores, eat breakfast, go to... "You know I won't go away." And that.
I put on the sound system and maxed out it's volume to evade the voice. Deep down I know it's always there, I can't chase it, I can't escape... Him.
"We know what you want, we know how to get it for you"
Again, I burnt my toast. And again, I gobbled it up.
"You hate yourself."
"No, I don't."
"You lie... To yourself, to us."
"No." I was getting restless. The search for my wristwatch was fruitless.
I knew leaving the house and opening up my mind to the thoughts of people would push his voice to the background, that's why he's always relentless while I'm... Home. But first, I needed my mantra. Needed to rekindle any little faith I had in myself.
I put off the sound system and walked up to the same mirror. Sure enough, the pale figure was still there, as though he never left.
"We need me." He said curtly.
I covered the little distance that was left between me and my reflection and watched him do the same. Sneering at the mirror, I let my index finger thud on it.
"YOU NEED ME."
"I can free us. We'll soar above the skies, our essence won't be enough to quell the thirst of the seas"
"YOU'VE MADE IT THIS FAR BECAUSE OF ME."
"Our light would be so bright, our enemies will lose theirs."
"IT'S TIME YOU START PUSHING."
"The sound of our name on their lips will be deafening."
"AND IF THEY DON'T BUDGE, SHOVE!!!"
"Hand over the reigns and watch them scatter."
The ring of my smart watch disturbed the serenity of the morning. Finally.
I dashed for it and answered with my earpiece. The voice on the other side only made two sentences before my face lost it's color. I stopped hearing what the voice was saying after that. Only echoes of the first two sentences kept replaying in my head as I stood, staring into the emptiness of the room.
"Look at us."
That was the only sound that made sense now. I could feel that smile from a good distance.
He was right. I was tired.
