Class and heartbeats.

I didn't get much sleep that night. I couldn't figure out why he had spoken to me or what was wrong. I sat with Luna during breakfast and stole a couple of glances at Draco. Luna babbled on about her summer, and asked me about mine. I wasn't really paying very much attention to her, which I knew was wrong. I had never told her about Draco, all she knew was that we had been friends. She was my best friend, but I didn't want to tell her. It was a secret I had kept for almost my whole life.

The day passed in a blur class after class. Any class he wasn't in passed quickly, any class he was in dragged on. It had always been this way. So when I got to potions and caught a glimpse of blonde hair, I knew I was in trouble. The new potions teacher asked us to sit in pairs. I made my way to an empty desk and hoped someone alright would join me. I knew people in the class, but no one I liked. It was hard being friends with people not in my year. Of course it wasn't always that way. For the first two years I had friends in every class. I had an actual social life. But that was ages ago before we grew up.

Someone slipped into the seat next to me, I looked to my side. I stifled a gasp. It was him. I wondered why he had chosen to sit by me. Then I realized it was because everywhere else was full. He gave me a half-hearted smile, which I cautiously returned. He was so gorgeous, I could hardly breathe when I was around him. I quickly looked back at my textbook and started studying the instructions.

"Do you mind sharing?" He asked. I realized he didn't have a book. I nodded and pushed the book to the middle of the table. We both arched our necks over it and read in silence. I was not reading however. I was barely doing anything. I couldn't even breathe. I could feel his breath though. Against my neck. It smelled of peppermint. I watched as his fingers traced the wording on the pages. My heart beat faster and faster. He sat up and started making the potion. I snapped out of my head and helped him. We didn't speak the entire class. Our potion ended up being second in the class. We had always worked well together. We were both smart, although I had always put more effort into school than he did. He had always had more of a social life, being on the quidditch and all.

I walked out of the class room following him. I preferred it this way, so I knew he wasn't watching me. It was the last class of the day so I followed him all the way to the dormitories. There were other people amongst us, but I didn't see who they were. I didn't care. My eyes were glued on him. They were always stuck on him. I couldn't control it. It had been like that forever, when we were eight he thought I was making fun of him since I couldn't stop staring. He never looked at me though, at least not after we stopped being friends. Or he hadn't before this year. After we stopped being friends, his eyes would always skip over me. As though I was invisible.

Once in the common room we ascended the opposite sides of the stairs up to our dormitories. I glanced at him once more. He was looking at me again. What did this mean? I wondered, as I wondered every time our eyes met. Once he saw me looking back his eyes flitted away so quickly I wasn't sure he had been looking at all. He had though, this had happened a few times and I had no idea what it meant. I knew what I wanted it to mean though.
