6:00PMDanielle Scott stood in front of her vanity mirror slicking and brushing her thick, coarse hair into a high bun as her and her mother prepared for Tuesday night Bible Study at a new church they were attending.
"Do I have to go?" She whined asking her mother, slumping her shoulders forward because she hated leaving the house even if it were just for a moment because she was paranoid.
"Why don't you wanna go?"
"Because... I thought it was gonna be a colored church.." She answered blunty. She wasn't a bigot but she was afraid of being around others because of past experiences.
"Remember last year when those colored girls died in that church down in Birmingham? All we want is to live life, better ourselves and be treated with respect and these animals just want us to die."
"You can't let that scare you. This isn't Alabama. Things are different here. There's all types of folk here. These people at the church are nice, understanding, sophisticated people." Natalie, Danielle's mother, preached to her. She hated how her mother was a pushover and seemed so tone deaf at times.
"We're leaving in a few minutes. Fix your face or I can do it for you.. You hear me?" Natalie pestered her daughter as she groaned, dragging her feet across the floor going to get her coat.
*short chapter but long one coming up*
