"She gave me a new life." He said looking down to the blades of grass which swayed in the soft breeze. It was only the two of them and the night sky watching them speak, one pleading, and another hurt and unforgiving. He could feel the disapproving gaze of John linger on him, knowing he was thinking of something less hurtful to say than what his mind has already conjured up. His lips moved like he began to speak but they stilled almost immediately. John took a sharp breath in before finally filling the quiet air.
"Okay, and what was so wrong with your life before? What was so wrong with us?" He asked calmly, well, as calm as he possibly could. "Noth-" Alexander started but John cut him off. "No, I'm not done. I found out about this by a letter, no mention of it before, asking me to be the best man for your wedding?"  He spoke this harshly, his eyebrows furrowing and his frown becoming more prominent. Alexander was silent. He wasn't sure as what to say, nor was he sure if John was done scolding him. When John gave an expectant glare, Alexander responded.
"Nothing was wrong with us but I needed the money, I needed the status. I needed my future and my legacy secured. That's not something I can have with you. You and I both know that. I should have told you in person, I should have discussed this with you before hand but it happened so fast. I didn't even have the time to think." Alexander tried to reason or even better give himself a lousy excuse from this talk. John wasn't having it though. He knew Alexander now better than anyone. John gave a scoff in response, arms crossing defensively.
"Yeah, no shit you didn't think Alexander. That's the only part of that wolf cry I believe. You didn't think about me or us, or what this is going to do to our relationship.. or shall I say lack of one now." Yeah, that was meant to sting. John was bitter but he had every right to be. He had been betrayed and left, the only person who had truly supported him, the only other person who knew all his secrets and the only other person who just loved him, has dragged his heart through the mud and stomped on it until it was shredded. If only Johns words could do the same to Alexander, so they'd be even and John would feel even, or better yet, happy. John noticed Alexanders body language though and he could tell he struck a nerve with the immigrant.
"What the hell does that mean?" Alexander questioned, but it came out more as a demand. Alexanders short temper reflected on John, the other only getting angrier as well. He couldn't help himself and his voice raised.
"I know you're not stupid Alexander! Exactly what you assume it means! We can't be.. whatever we were before- It's over! You have a wife! I gave myself to you and you ruined my trust and you think I'm going to continue this with you!?" John spilled, his voice giving an occasional crack as he fought back tears threatening to fall, but he'd be damned if he'd cried in front of Alexander, especially in this moment. "I can barley stand to look at you right now." He gritted his teeth. They stared at each other in silence now. They didn't have a choice to continue their conversation though because a heavily intoxicated Hercules and Lafayette came stumbling up the hill the best they could without spilling the 5 beers they had. John forced a smile on his lips and immediately took a drink first chance he had and had the decency to at least start out with small sips, which would later turn into full on chugs. Two of the beverages were handed to Alexander though, which he gratefully took as well, ready to down them and forget about every word previously shot at him by Laurens. Thankfully Hercules and Lafayette couldn't detect anything was wrong, at least not from what Alexander and John could tell.
Hours passed and they were all drunk off their asses, and in almost perfect timing Aaron had passed by and attention was afflicted on him. When Alexander told the boys to go somewhere with themselves John took this opportunity to slip out completely, explaining to Hercules and Lafayette he was turning in early and with that he had left towards his home and turned in as he said he would without a single tear shed. He said what he needed to and it was going to take a lot for Alexander to make it up to the curly haired man from South Carolina.
