21: one-way love

"Please take a seat, Soori."

Soori was completely confused. She took a glance at Sunghoon and walked towards the couch before taking a seat next to Taerae. Sunghoon had no idea what to do. The moment was so awkward to handle.

He politely bowed to Mrs.Choi and grabbed the doorknob to leave the house. Before he could leave, Mrs.Choi stopped him by calling his name. Sunghoon turned to look at the elderly woman in confusion.

"Please have a lunch with us. Please take a seat too."

Sunghoon shook his head,
"I need to go back to the hospital. The chief nurse is calling for me. I'm so sorry, Mrs.Choi. I will leave first. Thank you for welcoming me."

He took a glance at Soori for the last time and left the house. He stopped on his way when Jaeji suddenly stopped him from leaving. The girl stood in front of him while crossing her arms and staring into his eyes with an evil smile on her face.

Sunghoon barely smiled at her,
"Yes, Jaeji? Do you have something to say?"

Jaeji smiled at him, "Do you want to leave?"

"What do you mean?"

"Taerae is asking for approval from my mother, to get married to my sister. Are you willing to give him a chance?"

She continued, "Are you sure you won't regret it?"

Sunghoon scoffed,
"I will be happy for your sister, Jaeji. I'm excited to see her wearing the wedding dress and walking on the aisle with Taerae. She will be so happy with him."

Jaeji gasped, "Did you mean your words?"

Without hesitation, he nodded.
"I believe, Taerae will take care of her and protect her. Mrs.Choi will be so happy to watch her daughter getting married to a good man--"

"Did you really mean your words, Sunghoon?" Jaeji asked him coldly. Sunghoon sighed,

"I really mean my words, Jaeji. I need to leave first. See you next time." He patted her shoulder gently and left the place.

"I hope you won't have any regret."

She spoke up causing him to look at her blankly.

"I won't regret it, Jaeji."
After a moment, he smiled and got into the car.

"What did you say to him, Soori? Did you accept the proposal? Do you think he will be a great husband and a great father to your kids?"

Soori leaned her back against the wall and fixed her gaze on the wall. She had no idea what to do. It was a very big surprise, she had no idea that Taerae went to the house and asked her mother for approval to get married to her. She wasn't ready at all.

Taerae would be a great husband and father. Soori admit that, but Taerae was never her choice to get married to. To Soori, Taerae was a good friend who loved to take care of her and protect her. She had never seen him more than a friend. She didn't want to give him hope.

Soori sighed heavily and laid on the bed without talking to Jaeji who was sitting next to her. Jaeji barely smiled and started to tease her sister,

"The reason you're not happy is not because of the surprise proposal from Taerae. The reason you're not happy is because it's not a proposal from Sunghoon."
