I found myself pressing my lips against Austin's.
I didn't know how, when, and why the impulse had come, but he just smelled so good- like a mixture of a woody forest and a field of flowers- and there was no one around, after all.
We were barely five seconds into the kiss, and my hands were already in his hair, his arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer to him as we kissed.
It was the best kiss of my life. Also the only one.
After what seemed like forever, we had to break apart for air. Ah, the sad reality of life always comes crashing back down upon you whenever you want to enjoy the moment.
"Nat, that was- amazing," Austin said as we lay on my bed, staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars that I had bought and pasted on my bedroom ceiling as a child. They were old and faded now, and some had even dropped off, but I still loved to look at them. They reminded me of my determined childhood self, and how she would have dealt with life. They helped me go on on horrible days.
"I've wanted to do that since the day I met you," I whispered quietly.
"Really?" he asked.
"Yeah," I replied.
We laid there for a few moments, a comfortable silence all around us. The kind of silence that doesn't feel eerie, but friendly, when it surrounds you.
"I'd better get going," Austin said softly after a few minutes. "Football practice in twenty."
"Okay," I replied just as softly, so as not to break the spell over my room, as I sat up.
"See you," he smiled, opening my room door.
And just like that, he was gone.
