Prologue: I'll Find Out In Five Minutes
"Come on, Matt, tell me who won!" I plead, my hands smacked together.Matt rolls his eyes at me. "I can't tell you who won, I can get sued."
I cross my arms together. "I won't tell anyone, I promise."
He chuckles, giving me a small smirk. "You will never know who won, Natalie Goldson."
I scoff at him. "I'll find out in five minutes when they announce it over the TV, you sucker."
Running his hands through his dirty blonde hair he shoots me a cheeky smirk. I think - I know he is excited by the fact he is so giddy.
Currently, I am waiting in one of the rooms behind the stage where 'The Breakout' is filmed, waiting with Matt Hanson, one of my best friends and also one of the contestants on the show. The Breakout is an Australian reality TV show, where bands and singers go to compete for a large cash prize. The show offers no recording contract, but for each of the five years the show has been on, the top four have always gotten recording contracts from an agent who has been watching. Life will change so much when he and the others get a recording contract, because they will. I know they will get one, without a single doubt.
My friend, Matt, is in a boyband with three other boys, Ace, Jack and Leo, which goes by the name of 'Beat Four.' He is now in the top two in the show, waiting to be called onto stage for the winner to be announced. Although apparently he's already been told who it is.
I watch as Matt fiddles with his fingers, staring at the ground. He is so nervous right now, his breathing pace quick and heavy. Then I realise, he doesn't at all know who won, or he wouldn'e be so worried, or even excited for that matter, due to the already knowing.
"You don't know who won, do you?" I ask, and his head flicks up to look at me.
His face scrunches up and he gives me a sheepish smile. "Okay so maybe I lied so I could tease you."
I narrow my eyes in a mocking way. "Matt Hanson, how dare you lie to me." He grins at me.
"How do you feel?" I ask, giving him a concerned look.
"I feel really excited and happy," he says, grinnning like a child on Christmas. "I mean in a few minutes, I'll know who won, and it could be me and the other boys."
HIs face falls for a second as he looks away before turning to stare at me straight in the eye. "But I'm also so nervous and scared. What if all of it was for nothing?"
I give him my most sympathetic look. "Matt, whether you win or not doesn't matter, you got this far, that's such an achievement. And plus, if the past shows for anythings, it's that second and first always get picked up by a company anyway. So calm down, you're going to be fine. Okay?"
"Alright," Matt takes a deep breath and turns to look at me. "Thank you, Nat."
Smiling at him, I take his hand and give it a quick squeeze. "No problem, you'll be fine."
Matt gives me a smile, such a genuine one that I trult believe he is no longer worried. He suddenly looks around the room, peeking his head back and forth. "Where are the other boys?' he asks suddenly.
I shrug, looking around as well even though I know they aren't in the room. "I dunno."
"Beat Four and Gemima Bills are needed in the stage left wing," a voice announces over the speakers.
Giving me a sparing look and pulls me closer to him. "Please come with me?"
I sigh and quickly nod as he gives a satisfactory grin. "I have to say good luck to the others."
He pulls me along with him, as we dodge the crowd of people from stage production who are going the same way as us. When we reach the wings of the stage, I notice that the other boys, Ace, Jack and Leo are there, along with the other final contestant, Gemima. They are all chatting ot eachother, exchanging small grins every now and then. Although they are competing, everyone is always really friendly, there was never any rudeness or hostility.
"Hey!" I whisper as I walk over to them, dropping Matt's hand. We always have to quiet and whsiper behind the stage, because if we're too loud, our voices can project out into the crowd of people watching the show.
"Natalie!" Ace yells, running over to give me a hug. I smack him lightly for being so loud. He chuckles and gives me a tight hug, almost crushing my bones. I cough and he lets go, understanding that I need to breath.
"Good luck, Ace," I say and he gives me the biggest smile.
I then stand in front of Leo and I hug him Thank goodness, Leo is not the hugging type, so he keeps more of a distance when doing so. "Good luck," I say and he thanks me.
Jack gives me a kind smile as I hug him. "Good luck, have fun, relax," I say to him and he grins. Jack had been extremely worried about this ever since last week when they found out they were in the finals.
"Thank you I really appreciate your luck," he stutters. "Seriously, thank you, thank you so much, that was thank you." I smile at Jack as he mumbles and coughs. He isn't normally so odd. He just always becomes a nervous wreck before any show.
As soon as I stop hugging Jack, Gemima runs to me, her hug tighter than even Ace's. I pull away from the hug and wish her luck. She squeals, a wide grin on her face. While Jack is always a nervous wreck, Gemima always becomes too excited.
"Thirty seconds til showtime," the same voice as before pipes through the speakers, except here they are softer, as you have to be quiet here, like I said before.
Gemima walks over to Leo, as she knows I have to wish Matt luck too, and she puts her head on his shoulder, breathing in and out trying to calm herself.
Matt strides toward me and pulls me into a hug.
"Good luck," I whisper.
He smiles. "Thank you. I'm so nervous though."
I shake my head. "There's no need to be," I tell him.
We pull apart from the hug and stare eachother in the eyes.
"Just have fun, okay. Enjoy yourself," I encourage.
Nodding, Matt smirks. "Of course."
"Five seconds to curtain call," the speakers say.
I give Matt one last smile. One last smile before his life will change forever.
"Good luck," I say again.
He smiles at me and I smile back. And within the next second Matt and the others are running on stage, and my heart is pounding.
There are several performances, and the boys and Gemima answer a bunch of questions from the audience. And now the winner is to be announced.
The host, Mick, comes out and I hold my breath, in anticipation. "The winner is Beat Four," he says and I gasp, grinning.
Gemima screams in excitement for the boys, and immediately goes to hug Leo.
"Love you!" she yells to Leo, blowing him a kiss, as lots of fans from the crowd scream. Oh Gemima. She and Leo are close friends but they aren't dating. Of course heaps of fans think they are and now Gemima is adding fuel to the fire.
"Love you too!" Leo replies, playing along.
Ace and Jack are staring at eachother, shouting at eachother in shock. Mick is holding ht eenvelope and slip of paper smiling at the audience, and Matt is frozen in shock.
They won.
