The breeze rattled the autumn trees and scattered leaves across the yard as Pikachu darted from leaf pile to leaf pile. Vulpix sighed as she divided her attention between watching over her playful and carefree friend while comforting the hardworking perfectionist, Minccino. Even though Vulpix promised Minccino that they would help clean everything up, the promise did very little to alleviate the pain of losing a whole morning's worth of cleaning in under a few minutes. On the other hand, Pikachu was having the time of his life as he jumped into a new pile and rolled around. "This is the best one yet!" He cried joyfully as Minccino glared tearfully at him. Vulpix let out a small anxious laugh, worried that Minccino would attack him at a moment's notice.
"All that work for nothing." Minccino said bitterly as Pikachu joined them at last. The trio got to work cleaning up the leaves as quickly as possible and within a few hours, the yard was spotless. Pikachu chased stray leaves playfully as vulpix settled down for a nap and Minccino prepared some refreshments.
"Hey V!" Pikachu called out happily as he joined Vulpix in the shade. She answered him with a yawn and attempted to fall back asleep.
"Come on V. You promised that you would finish your story today!" He whined. He shook her gently until Vulpix finally relented and sat up in defeat. Pikachu sat down quietly, staring eagerly at his friend with big sparkling eyes.
"Where did we leave off?" Vulpix asked drowsily.
"At the cliff." Pikachu replied. The cool wind blew gently and the leaves fell slowly as Vulpix told her story.
The rain drummed on the stone floor as the wind howled, lightning flashed, and thunder roared. Standing at the edge of the cliff, low on energy and running out of moves, their was only one thing to do. She looked hard at the opponent in front of her, then to the egg behind them and roared. A thud was heard as the Adventurer hit the wall. The egg began to wobble and roll towards the edge, the Adventurer lunged towards it but failed to retrieve the egg. She watched in horror as the Reaper ran down the cliff side, caught the egg, and descended towards the base of Steel Point Mt. in retreat. The Adventurer wasted no time on the journey back through the mystery dungeon, but progress was slow due to the injuries she had sustained in battle. At the base of the mountain, the Reaper was greeted by two more adventurers who blocked her path of escape. She roared loudly, enticing them to battle, and received a gallant response from the smallest of the two heroes. Her opponent lacked experience, but the odds couldn't have been more stacked in his favor. The Reaper was battle weary and out numbered, factor in bad weather and a type advantage. Her chances of winning were slim to none, but the Reaper had a plan. They began to circle the battlefield as each fighter prepared for the first blow. The rain began to let up and the wind relented a little as the Reaper charged forward with a quick attack, the Adventurer used slash in retaliation.
A gush of wind interrupted Vulpix as it rattled and shook the leaves off the trees. "Oh no. The leaves are back!" Pikachu exclaimed as he jumped into action. Vulpix watched her friend happily chase down stray leaves and pretend that he was on an adventure of his own. She shivered as another breeze came by. Days like this made her long for the warmth and comfort of her little hut where she could nap in peace, but those days were few and far between. Pikachu always wanted to do something or go somewhere and he just had to bring her along. She missed the quiet days at home and wished that they would come back.
"Watch out!" Pikachu exclaimed as he ran around the leaf pile. Vulpix watched as he added a few more leaves to the pile, gently padding them down to make them stick. He began talking to the pile as if it were some Pokémon, asking if they were okay and if they needed anything else. It made Vulpix laugh a little, watching him partake in a mock quest. Preparing for the day that he would go on a real quest, and be rewarded with a little praise and gratitude. Instead of all the scolding and jeers he usually gets. She couldn't help but wish for that day too, because she knew there was an under appreciated hero in him. Throughout all the pretend adventures, made up quests, and trouble he got into, she truly could see a genuine and caring heart.
"Hey!" Minccino called from the doorway as the smell of fresh baked cookies drifted through the air, signaling to the two Pokémon that it was time to head inside. Pikachu started towards the door, but Vulpix hung back to take one last look at the little leaf pile he made. Just because Pikachu was her best friend and she could see the good in him, didn't mean a little payback wasn't required for the trouble he had dragged her into. Pikachu reached the door and turned around, half expecting to see his friend walking towards him or still sleeping under the tree. Instead she was rolling around in his freshly made leaf pile! He gaped at her in shock as Vulpix stuck her toungue out at him playfully. He then began to laugh.
"I'm not saving you any cookies!" He yelled.
"I'll take some of yours then." She told him when they were inside.
As the two headed home, Pikachu spoke up.
"So, what happened next?" Vulpix looked at her friend. He smiled, "In your story. What happened next?" A moment passed before she answered. "The Reaper got away."
The battle was reaching its climax as the rain slowed to a stop with both parties sustaining damage, the Reaper having endured the most. It was clear who the victor would be in a matter of two more well placed attacks. The third adventurer stood at the opening of the cave watching the fight unfold in front of her. Her teammate prepared his strongest attack as the Reaper prepared a counter attack. The Adventurer stumbled out into the open, eagerly awaiting her teammate's victory. Hoping with all her might that at long last they could put the villain in her place. Finally, the Adventurer released his strongest attack followed by the Reaper's counterattack which resulted in a small explosion. Smoke engulfed the battlefield for a short amount of time before immediately disappearing. In the middle of the field stood one challenger. The Reaper was nowhere to be found.
