~Tate's POV~

I feel like the girl's in the movies and tv shows and books that find the love of their life and live happily ever after, minus the sad and scary bits, and it IS like that for me...if the guys were vampires of course. It's the next day and I hear a car honking. I look and see Edward and Jasper standing next to one of their family's cars. I walk over to Bella and she's looking out her window, smiling. I clear my throat and she turns around. I say, my arms crossed as I lean against her door frame, "I know." She plays dumb, "Know what?"

I say, "The secret. Jasper told me yesterday." She just says, surprised, "Oh." I nod, lifting my eyebrows while I look away, "Yea. So, we should hurry and get dressed before we make our boys impatient." She smiles and lightly chuckles and I leave the room, changing in mine. I'm so happy that I don't need that gauze anymore and that I no longer have any pain or discomfort. That all went away this morning when I woke up.

Since I can use my fingers again, I decided to bring my guitar and sketchbook with me today

Since I can use my fingers again, I decided to bring my guitar and sketchbook with me today. We walk out to the car and Edward says to me, "Welcome to the family." I smile and Jasper asks, "You gonna play today?" I nod, "Yea. I mean, since I get the use of my fingers again, I really want to." Me and him get in the backseat while Bella and Edward are in the front.

We get to the school and everyone Is staring at us again as Jasper and Edward put their arms around us. Thank goodness they seem to only be really interested in Bella and Edward, but I see eyes on us as well. It's like the entire school finds us so interesting all of the sudden. What is this, animal planet? Are we going to get eaten by a big ass lion or something else as terrifying and there's suspenseful music playing in the background?

We're at our lockers, Bella and Edward disappearing away, when Jasper says, "I can tell that you have a million questions going through your head." I nod and the bell rings, signaling that it's time for us to go to class. We're sitting down in the back and the class is dark since a movie is going to turn on when he whispers to me, "You can ask me." I tap my pen a few times on my desk, thinking and trying not to bombard them all at once, but once the movie plays, I can't hold it back anymore.

I ask, whispering, "So, does a person have to be dying to...become like you?" He shakes his head, "No, that's just Carlisle. He'd never do this to someone who had another choice. None of us would." I ask, "Why not?" He explains, "It's slow and excruciatingly painful. It feels like you're being burned alive." I ask, "How long does it take to turn?" He thinks, "Most of the time it takes about three, maybe four days, but it depends on the amount of venom that you have in your body. Say you got bit once, it would take a few days, but If you were bitten multiple times or had it, lets say injected into your heart, then it would be much quicker."

I ask, "Like, within minutes?" He nods, "Yes." I ask, "How long have you been like this?" He answers, "142 years." I lift my brows at him. Wow...that's an awfully long time...I ask, nervous, "Do you...do you mind if I asked you HOW you turned?" He says, lifting up his sleeves below the table so that no one else had a chance to see them, "I didn't have quite the same UPBRINGING as my adoptive siblings. In 1863, I was appointment Major of the Confederate army. Youngest to be given that role. It was during the civil war. All the training the confederate army gave me was useless against the newborns. Still, I've never lost a fight." I smirk at his cockiness as I lightly trace some of his scars with just the tips of my fingers.

He continues, "Before the war, even before they gave me the role, I hadn't even seen any real battle before." I ask, "Until..." He finishes, "Until I met a certain immortal, Maria. I was riding back to Galveston after evacuating all of the women and children when I saw them. I immediately offered them my aid and in return she bit me. They all did...many times." I ask, "Was she creating her own army or something?" He nods, "They were very common in the south. Constant brutal battles for territory. Maria won 'em all. She was smart, careful, and she had me."

I look confused and he continues, explaining further, "I was her second in command. I have an ability to control emotions to which served her well. I trained her newborns. Endless occupations and she never let them live beyond the first year. It was my job to dispose of them. I could feel everything they felt." I see him start getting upset so I hold his hand in mine as he continues, "I thought what Maria and I had was love, but I was her puppet. She pulled the strings. I didn't know there was another way...'till I found Alice. Now she seen me coming of course, since she can see visions of the future." I ask, "Why haven't you guys moved to a sunnier place? Warmer?"

He smiles, "We sparkle." I ask, "I'm sorry, did you say sparkle?" He nods and chuckles, causing the teacher to say something to us, "Quiet down back there." We just look away and Jasper puts his sleeves back down. He continues, "She helped me see a better way to being a vampire and took me to Carlisle. He turned Edward, which the rest of us wouldn't have been able to have done." I ask, "Why not?" He says, "It's the thirst. It's extremely hard to control and even with years of practice, I still struggle with it most of the time."

I ask, "Do I make it harder?" He gives a look and I look down, ashamed that I hurt him. He squeezes my hand lightly, "It's worth it. More than." I smile and we continue talking. He explains to me about New Borns and a lot of other things throughout the entire day. Apparently not every vampire has gifts. Edward can read minds, Rosalie has enhanced beauty - which is painfully obvious - and amazing self control, Emmett has advanced strength, Carlisle has the most self control than any vampire, Alice has Subjective Cognition which is the visions and seeing people's decisions. He admitted that my blood is harder to stay in control from than other people's because I'm his "singer". He basically explained how everyone has one and that Bella is Edwards.

Which is why he looked repulsed when he smelled Bella that first day....because she smelled TOO good and he was trying to stay in control. He also said that Alice gave him a very vague warning about me before we met. Not ME specifically but that a girl would come into his life that would change everything and that he would know when he saw me. I'm glad I came to Forks for many reasons, but its no longer because I can run; it's because I met Jasper. Because I have a new life with Jasper.
