Note: I hope you enjoy the first chapter of this fanfiction! My goal is to upload a new chapter or two every week and to ensure that this story is jam-packed with twists and turns. As I've mentioned before, some of the lore and backstory of this fanfiction world may be twisted to fit into the plot better, so please read this with an open mind. <3
Freedom, independence, and adulthood. Eventually, all of these words coincided with each other at one point in everyone's lives, sometimes even colliding in either spontaneous bursts of excitement or forced change. But unlike many, Evelyn Rose didn't have either reaction to the newfound freedom she dipped her toes in. Yes, she embraced it, but she didn't splash in the depths of it all. Besides, what was the point of engulfing yourself with so much more to be seen on the surface?
Evelyn looked out the taxi window, watching the scenery pass her by. Trees, people, the occasional bird, or sometimes even a dog or cat crossed her vision. Still, it was hard to tell if she bothered paying attention to these small details. Her earbuds vibrated with heavy rock, and in a way, soothed the silent void that usually filled a taxi cab.
Heavy rock was like a reminder of Evelyn's home and somewhat pushed aside the homesickness that she had been struggling with for over a year. Sure, some may find her music tastes daunting, but what could she do about that? Evelyn's mom owned a guitar business back in Texas, where she manufactured and sold many great guitars to even greater individuals. Before Evelyn had left for college, they had explored making drum sets as well.
'I wonder how that's been going along? As busy as my first year was, I couldn't exactly call as often as I would've liked... I'm sure Mom's been doing good, though. I'll go ahead and call her once I get to the estate.'
As the sidewalks and people began to fade away, Evelyn figured that it wouldn't be too long until she reached her new temporary home. She wasn't bursting with joy, nor was she discontent. In a way, it was exciting. Evelyn was going to be roommates with six individuals, only one of them also being a girl. At first, it put her off, but when compared to the other places of rent?
Evelyn was fine rooming with others in a large estate for that cheap of a rent. They could be devil worshippers, and Evelyn still doubted she would turn the place away. Careless, perhaps, but money-wise? She didn't mind.
"Ey, we made it to the Anderson estate. I'll help ya get your suitcases and such." A gruff voice interrupted her music. She held back a groan of annoyance, and even if she didn't admit it, felt nervous.
Making friends was not something Evelyn would call herself good at. It didn't help that in a room, she stood out. No, Evelyn wasn't the stereotypical average height woman, much to her distaste. When she stepped out of the car, Evelyn was able to tower over the cab driver, standing at the height of 5'11". Not only was she intimidating to some, but she also looked distant.
Evelyn took out her earbuds and put them in the front of her short-sleeved shirt, and with one look up, Evelyn almost gasped in astonishment. She knew the place was huge, but never did she think it would be this grand. The front lawn looked like it was recently tended to, same with the fresh glint along the windows and polished flowers. At least to Evelyn, it was apparent that the occupants took great care in making the place look good for her. While she was impressed, she couldn't help but be bewildered. Did they expect her to be a pleasant individual?
Before she could ponder more on the thought, Evelyn mentally shrugged the questions away to instead focus on taking out her luggage. She had two medium-sized suitcases and a messenger bag that contained her laptop, snacks she had carried along the way, and other small necessities. Another piece of luggage that Evelyn had packed was an acoustic guitar. This was a gift given to her by Maggie, her mother, before moving out of the house. Evelyn was occupied with college work, but in the rare moments of freedom she had, Evelyn enjoyed learning how to play guitar.
