"alone or not

you gotta walk forward"

---------------------------------------------------

she woke up back in the soft bed at the mansion. she remembered last night and groaned at the thought of how she fell asleep on the street. then she remembered how she made the hairbrush float and she shuddered. she didn't believe she could make the hairbrush float.

or could she?

she pushed the thoughts out of her head and sat up on her bed. makeup that was covering the bruise was on her pillow, and she looked in the mirror to see the bruise was dark - and noticeable. she ran into the bathroom to cover it up. it was easy to cover it up, and it almost looked gone. she took a deep breath. then, she heard a knock.

"can i come in?" she sighed in relief - it was miles. "yep!" she said, and miles walked. he looked at her, concerned. he closed the door behind him and stared at her. "so she hits you," he said calmly. she inhaled sharply and faced him. "i don't know what you're talking about," she said coolly. his thumb brushed her cheek, and part of her makeup got wiped off. "oh really?" he asked with a cocked eyebrow. "i- er, fell," she said. "don't lie, i know she does...hit you," he said. she sighed and turned around in defeat. he smirked. she turned around and walked out of the room, and once again, the throbbing pain started. he walked next to her, and they went downstairs together.

she ate her food and answered all of kate's questions with either 'yes,' 'no,' or 'i don't know,' when she got finished eating, she saw little flora grab her hand. "outside?" the little girl asked, and aurora couldn't refuse. miles also followed.

aurora followed flora to the koi pond. aurora sat down on one of the stones looking at the nature surrounding her. miles stood behind them, just watching. flora watched aurora. flora and aurora skipped stones and talked with each other until kate came and took flora away. as soon as they left, miles came and sat next to the girl.

"so..." she started, not knowing why he came next to her. "do you know how to ride horses?" he asked simply. "eh, i'm okay," she said. miles grabbed her hand and they went to the stables.

he helped her up on one of the horses, and he went on the other. they started at a trot, and they talked while they were on a trail. "so, what do you do in your free time?" she asked - not knowing what else to ask. "drums, guitar," he responded, looking at her. "cool, i play guitar too," she responded. it was awkward around them - neither knowing what to say. he laughed randomly and aurora turned to stare at him. "this is so awkward," he said laughing.

usually, he knew how to speak with girls - but he couldn't now. he knew something was off here and he had to find out.

they brought the horses back to the stable, now they were talking more. they walked together back into the house, and they went upstairs. however, as they got close to his room - he seemed to become angrier. he went inside his room first, and aurora only assumed she should follow.

he laid back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. "you okay?" she asked. he glared at her. "i'm fine," he said coldly. "can you leave?" he said, glaring at her. she was taken aback by his sudden change of mood.  "fine," she responded just as coldly. she left the room. she slammed the door. she wasn't gonna let him affect her.

she went downstairs to the kitchen to get some food. kate came in after. aurora grabbed an apple and turned to face her sister. "is there something going on between you and miles?" she said - getting straight to the point.

aurora sighed. "god damn it, kate, no i-" aurora responded. "i've been here only like twice, what the hell?" aurora responded, now angry. of course, kate had to act like a 'mother figure'. perfect kate. "okay," kate said, sighing. "i'm just worried about you, miles is...weird," kate added. aurora pursed her lips. "i can take care of myself. i have been for a while now anyway," aurora said coldly. kate stared at her, with a slightly open mouth. "i-" kate started, but aurora cut her off. "it doesn't matter kate," aurora finished, then walked out of the room.

aurora grabbed her guitar and played a little bit - she hadn't practiced in a while. she plucked the strings and played a couple of songs. she played her favorite - hayloft. she knew the intro by heart and was still learning the verses. she played softly.

---

miles stood outside the door, listening to her guitar. she was good. he didn't know why he lashed out at her earlier, but he did. he didn't know how to feel anymore. he walked away from the door.

dinner was quiet, no one said a word. however, both miles and kate were looking at aurora, and aurora was trying to not look at them. aurora ate quickly and put her plate in the sink. she ran upstairs to her room - she hoped no one could disturb her there.

she took off her long sleeve shirt. underneath she wore a plain, white, t-shirt. she looked in the mirror at the black veins. they were reaching her neck, and her shoulders. she shuddered. the darkest spots were at her heart. she didn't feel sick - which was strange. she thought that the black substance would block the veins and arteries but she felt fine. she continued staring at herself in the mirror. she had eyebags. she was about to reach for her shirt when she heard the door open to reveal miles.

they stared at each other and in unison, they said

"what the fuc-"
