It was peaceful as Elizabeth woke up. She'd be turning eleven tomorrow, and she was slightly upset because they were in lockdown and Mary couldn't come from university to celebrate.
Anne and the other were going to decorate, and Jane would make a big cake. Kitty and Anna would give her the special present they'd promised her when she turned eleven.
Quietly, she slipped out of bed, and got dressed. Her SiX shirt from when Mary took her to Chicago, and some freshly clean leggings. Jane always had laundry day on Sundays. Elizabeth braided her hair the way Mary taught her, and started her morning ritual. Snagging the bathroom before Anne and Kitty could. That way she could take her time and wouldn't have to deal with waiting for Kitty to touch up her pink hair, or Anne taking forever deciding what to do with her hair, even though in the end she'd end up keeping it down or doing space buns.
Afterward, either she'd eat whatever Jane or Catherine had made for breakfast, or convince Anna to take her out to a cafe.
It had been about months, and she was ready for it to be over. Anna could no longer sneak them out of the house to the cafe, and Jane was ordering things online so they wouldn't have to go out. Elizabeth unfortunately had a tutor who'd FaceTime her for a few hours after lunch.
Edward, who was now seven, and Mae, who was four also had online tutors. Mae really only had a tutor for about an hour, who taught her the basics of how to read while Cathy sat nearby to keep an eye on her.
Edward would often help out Jane in the kitchen before he had to meet with his tutor using his mother's phone.
So today, Elizabeth quietly walked downstairs. Jane was in the kitchen making tea. Elizabeth quietly sat at the counter with a book and read it without making a sound. Jane however did know she was there.
"You all right Lizzie?" She asked, giving her a cup of tea.
"I've been better Jane. I miss Mary." She took a sip of the tea then continued her book.
Jane nodded sympathetically. "Sorry babes. Mary calls almost everyday from uni doesn't she? Doesn't she have a nice flat close to the university?"
Lizzie nodded. "She and a few friends bought a flat together. She can't come visit though."
"Sorry babes. She'd visit if she could."
Catherine Seymour came downstairs. "Hey Janey." She said, kissing her wife of the cheek.
"Morning Cath. I made coffee, and I'll start breakfast soon."
"No, I'll do it. Read a book or something."
Elizabeth sighed. She took her tea and her book and migrated to the sitting room. Anna and Kitty were asleep tangled together on one of the sofas. She sat in the big comfy armchair and continued her book.
Then Anna's phone rang. Kitty and Anna woke up abruptly and tumbled off the couch as Anna scrambled for her phone. The couple had recently started considering adopting after they had been together for about two years. Anna and Kitty had the same view on marriage, it was dangerous, so they decided that because they loved each other a lot but didn't want to get married, they'd adopt. Then of course, COVID.
"Hello?" Anna asked. The person on the other end of the line started talking. She covered the speaker and hissed to Kitty. "Babes it's the agency. They've found a match."
Kitty gripped Anna's arm as Anna said, "Yes this is she. Yes Katherine is with me. Really that soon? A meeting. Later at tea, sounds perfect. Great see you then. Yes thank you, goodbye." Anna hung up.
Kitty squealed. "Anna! We're going to be parents! This is so exciting!"
Anna nodded and kissed her girlfriend. "Yes we are." Elizabeth smiled softly before returning to her book.
