Goku doesn't die by sacrificing himself against cell. Instead, Gohan doesn't activate ssj2 because he is more like his mother wants him to be a scholar. Goku still believes that Gohan can beat cell but is very wrong. In Gohan's cries for help to his father, goku does not answer them, believing that Gohan will unleash his Power, but it was too late. gohan is killed, and everyone is furious at Goku because they told him to help Gohan, and he did nothing. Goku kills Cell after watching him kill Gohan, but after the battle everyone wants Goku to leave Earth they give him one last wish before he leaves and Goku says farewell to his friends who now think he is a monster.
