This is a poem to a 1-weight 'featherweight' fly fishing rod that my longterm fishing buddy (and sometimes arch nemesis) 'Kempy' built for me from scratch off a carbon blank. It has an embossed blue wing-covert feather of a British (Eurasian) Jay, and is the lightest, most beautiful and delicate fly rod that I possess. Made for small streams and the tiny wild trout that stalk them.

A coming-of-age survival story set against the wild rivers of the Pacific Northwest. When a suburban boy is sent to spend his summers fly fishing with his hard-edged grandfather, he's thrust into a world of rough campsites, early mornings, and unspoken expectations. But when a solo expedition turns into a near-death experience, he's forced to fight the river-and himself-to survive. Sometimes manhood doesn't arrive with age. Sometimes it comes with water in your lungs and a will to live.
