Dana hasn't always been fond of the difference in her parents' treatment towards her and her brother. Her parent's justify this as acts they take to protect their daughter from their society but Dana believes otherwise. Her feminist ideology and drive for equality causes Dana to get caught up in many disputes with her mother, principal, and even her sister Laila, and twin brother Laith.
As the oldest in the family, Laila takes on the responsibility of looking after her siblings. She attempts to protect Laith from physical oppression at school and prevent Dana's hatred towards society's gender roles and stereotypes from sabotaging her school life and their family. But when the family discovers a scandal, Laila is left reconsidering every action she has ever taken that may have belittled Dana's feelings.
The book strives to represent women and men in the Jordanian society through Dana and Laith's opposing societal struggles. Laith's desire to fit into these standards, and Dana's desire to oppose them. Laila, is subsequently caught in the middle and assumes blame for her sister's actions.
