Melody Sparks has gone her whole life identifying with one sole word: orphan. Her unfortunate circumstance was nothing more than a simple teenage pregnancy of twins, which had resulted in half a miscarriage and a daughter up for adoption. Melody's always felt like she's missing half of herself, and when your lot in life landed you with a dead twin, that's pretty understandable to most people: but the 'most people' who saw it like that were also the people who saw Melody as a victim of misfortune, the 'most people' who apologize to no avail with looks of guilt and pity for not her but instead something none of them could change. The second Melody hits eighteen without ever growing up, however, she also hits the road with a mission to find the missing half of her identity. Leaving Chicago, Illinois with a handful of cash from acting as waitstaff in the city is a dream come true for Melody.
