PLAY BEYOND: The PlayStation Phenomenon details the birth & rise of one of gaming's most popular and most prominent videogame brands in the history of the industry. The home console market was once again dominated by one clear victor after the dust had finally settled on the 16 & 32-bit console wars when Nintendo outlasted its only real competitors, Sega. From that point on, the state of the industry in early 1995, it appeared as though history was deemed to repeat itself with Sega reeling and licking its proverbial wounds after the disastrous launch of their newest home console add-on, the Sega Genesis 32X flopping right outta the gate and then to make matters worse, the sales of their Sega CD console was underperforming based on their quarterly earnings and the impending launch of their latest console, the Sega Saturn was met with great uncertainty internally. Sega was losing the battle and once again Nintendo was poised to be the ONLY real game in town.... at least the ONLY real game in town that mattered!
Nintendo never regained its near-total dominance of the market share in the United States and this was contributed by the sudden announcement and introduction of a new player in the field, a fresh faced competitor that had the resources and clout to take Nintendo head on, this was the SONY corporation! What began as a friendly and mutual business decision to help co-develop Nintendo's new next-gen console would lead to sour grapes when their partnership and business relationship had crumbled and disintegrated in the wake of a swift and shocking betrayal: Enter the PlayStation, a home console that enjoyed instant success from its North American launch date in early September of 95.
PLAY BEYOND tells the story of Sony's introduction into the gaming market and its eventual dominance across the globe. The book covers the decades-long sustained success of Sony's home console and its various iterations throughout the generations and highlights its game library!
