2114, Oslo. The Future Library is opening its doors to the entire world population: a library consisting of only 100 volumes, written starting from 2014 - one a year - and guarded so that no one can read them ahead of schedule. Erik and Rune are the Voktere of the library, two guardians in charge of keeping everything in place until, a month before the inauguration, Rune discovers that a book has been stolen: "The Ballad of Death". Erik sets out in search of the writer in order to have a copy of the manuscript but the manhunt seems to be paved with closed doors, secrets, and murder.

While waiting in line for an airport restroom, Hailey mentions her unpublished manuscript, temporarily titled Document 513. A handsome criminal overhears the title and jumps to the incorrect conclusion that she has in her possession a different Document 513, this one a map to a long-lost treasure. With her life now in danger, the two of them -- along with Hailey's roommate, Natalie -- uproot from their normal lives to attempt to finish the treasure hunt. However, they don't actually have the map, and on top of that, they aren't the only ones looking for it. But even with dangerous people lurking around every corner, Hailey can't seem to focus on the task at hand when her new partner in crime is so attractive...
