50% of the world are normal humans. The other half gain a mark on their 16th birthday, this mark claims them as some form of supernatural creature. Creatures such as vampires, kelpies, fairies, werewolves, mermaids, elves, and many more. Idalia's whole family has been human for many generations without fail, but she's the first to break that trend. On her 16th birthday she finds a mark that claims her as a creature so rare, they're said to be extinct.
