I opened my eyes to the sound of someone calling my name, or at least that's what I thought I heard. I laid there for a few minutes trying to hear anything. I had just shrugged it off and started to fall back asleep before my door slammed open, revealing my mother as she came in.

"Idalia! Get up out of bed! It's your birthday, and your dad wants to celebrate with you before he leaves for work." She says, yanking the blankets off of me in the process. Groaning, I slowly sat up and rubbed my eyes. 'That's right,' I thought to myself, 'I turn sixteen today.' For a lot of people that's an exciting age, when they turn 16 they get a mark claiming them as a specific species, usually the same species as whatever their parents are. Unless they had an affair, that's always some interesting drama. Each species has their own powers, they also gain traits related to their species that they didn't have before, like gills or tails. Sadly, only 50% of the world gets a mark, the rest of them are normal humans. My family is part of that 50% that don't have marks, and we have been for many generations. So you can probably see why I wasn't expecting much out of today.

"Are you getting up, or are you going to just sit there?" My mom asks, bringing me out of my thoughts.

"Yeah, let me go shower and I'll be down shortly." I said, throwing my legs over the side of the bed. With a nod she leaves the room, shutting my bedroom door behind her. I stand up and quickly gather my clothes before heading towards the bathroom and hopping into the shower. After I was done and dressed, I looked towards the mirror to start fixing my hair. As I was brushing my hair up into a quick bun, I saw something on my collar bone that looked almost like a tattoo. Briefly forgetting about doing my hair, I leaned closer to the mirror to get a better look. The tattoo-like mark was black in color and slightly bigger than a tea light candle, it was in the shape of a crescent moon with a small star between the two points of the moon. A small gasp left my mouth as I realized, with slight excitement and fear,

     "I have a mark."
