When the odd weather comes into Haines, Alaska, the small town knows what is going to happen next. To some it will be bad, and to others it will be an honor. Whenever this kind of weather comes in, it means that one of the towns children (above 13, younger than 18) will be chosen to go to a special place in which its whereabouts, and what it’s used for remains unknown. To be chosen is the greatest honor you can receive in the town, but that also means leaving behind everything you’ve known and love. When 17 year old Autumn Vast was chosen, she was also given a choice that has never been given to anyone before. She was given the decision to stay, or go to this mysterious place. Choosing to go will mean that her family will be honored like they’re heroes, but going also means that she could be putting her family at risk of starvation. She was one of their main source of food, and without Autumn, the Vast’s would have to work extra hard. But staying is the last thing that Autumn wants. She always dreamed of being chosen and being able to see for herself what this curious place was really like.
