A/N @end!!
***************
The day was unusually dreary over the small town of Haines, Alaska. Bad weather was nothing new, and to any new comer to the town, this would seem normal.
But, this was anything but normal for the occupants.
Inside of 13 Mud Bay Road, the inhabitants were looking out the window restlessly. For this abnormal climate meant that someone was on their way to take one of the towns young adults, and nobody wanted it to be their child who was taken.
Autumn Vast looked out the window forlornly, she couldn't, WOULDN'T, be chosen to leave this place; which in its own way was her personal hell. 'Maybe', she thought dreamily, 'I could be chosen to go to this new place, and leave here.'
This thought made her even more nervous. Autumn had learned a long time ago that by thinking about wishful thoughts made it even worse when they never came true.
Mrs. Vast, on the other hand, was thinking the exact opposite. She was thinking that without her only daughter, life would be so much harder for her and her husband. That they might even risk their house being repossessed, and even the thought of that made Melanie Vast shudder.
Autumn was one of the only sorts of income that the family received. Her father, Russell, worked as well, but he was a fisherman, and profit was low this year. He was sometimes away for months at a time trying to make a living for his family. But, being away made it so that while he was gone, the mother and daughter had to fend for themselves.
Without Autumn, Mrs. Vast's nightmare would be a reality. This was, of course, not the only reason Melanie didn't want Autumn to be taken. She was a parent, and loved her daughter as most parents do. Without her daughter, life wouldn't be the same. Mrs. Vast would be by herself when her husband went fishing; with no one to talk to but her gossipy neighbors.
That was one of the downfalls about living in a small town. Everyone knew everyone's business. But, a perk was being able to walk a block to go to your best friend's house.
Of course, that would be what most teenagers would do at Autumn's age, but she had only one best friend, and they knew each other so well that right now she knew exactly what he was doing.
'Right now', she thought to herself, 'Alex will probably be eating his dinner. Or, maybe he has noticed the weather and is watching like we all are.'
It just so happened that the one that Autumn called her 'best friend' was doing the latter. Alex was very similar to Autumn, except that he was a boy. He, like her, loved to be alone and also like her had mixed feelings about the weather.
Alex wanted to be picked as much as any other person his age, but knew the responsibilities that came with being chosen.
Part of the reason why Alex and Autumn got along so well was because both of their families were going through the same thing. Alex's dad worked alongside Russell on the fishing boat, and like Russell was not doing well on the almost non-existent fish filled shores.
Alex was pulled out of his thoughts by a high pitched noise that seemed to echo off the walls of his head.
The noise was sudden, but not unexpected. Every time the weather came in, this noise shortly followed to let the town know to start gathering into the main square
Alex sighed and went up to his room to change into clothes that would prove to the annual visitors that he was worth their time.
