It was New Orleans after all
He couldn't loose her, but he couldn't keep her and he knew Caroline wouldn't have listend to him.
A so called mistake was made, by both of them and in their eyes the other one was at foult.
Which lead to alot of concequenses, hurt and saddnes
and of course Bonnie's and Kol's friendship got cought up in
and so did the weird thing going on between Elijah and Elena.
Years passed with no contact at all between the former coupels, maybe Caroline cought spies from time to time, or saw Elijah in town, trying to muster the courage to face her best friend Elena, he just started watching her once a moth, the tenth, you could see her being happy, just trying to make the best of her life, never talking about what happend between her and Elijah, so what happens, if Caroline finally moves on, from the biggest hearbreak of her life, will the "King" tolerate in what in his eyes is betrayel?What went wrong between Elijah and Elena?
