    Smartest of the Benton siblings, Phoebe Benton didn't care about marriage or societal functions. She was content with being a spinster if it meant she could become a physician. When she hears of a plague ravaging a village near the Anglo-Scottish border, she quickly takes off north with her cousin Benjamin to offer aid. When she arrives she meets a familiar face in Rafe Northcutt, the man she unknowingly stole the heart of.
    
    When a distress letter arrives from his cousins in the north, Rafe is sent by his family to help them. Never did he imagine he would meet Phoebe there again; the beautiful young woman who selflessly saved his sister's life. While his focus must be on his family and the plague overtaking them, his attention and heart cannot help but seek after Phoebe.
    
    Phoebe never wanted to fall in love, but the longer she spends with Rafe the more she is drawn to him. But falling in love in the middle of a crisis is anything but ideal. Especially when conspiracy abounds.
