Samantha, a thirteen-year-old with bladed tendrils stemming from her back, escapes from the talons of Commander Diana Gray and the Orphanage Foundation: a cruel, twisted home of experimentation for abducted girls who are referred to as "Orphans." A home to which Samantha is willing to do anything and everything to avoid ever returning.
    
    Shortly after her escape, she crosses paths with a sweet, kind farm girl named Willow. With her older sister's help, Willow becomes dedicated to hiding Samantha from the Foundation.
    
    The Foundation's pursuit of Samantha is relentless, however, and when two additional Orphans are released to seemingly assist in the search, 
    Samantha and Willow's efforts to remain hidden are quickly jeopardized. Will the girls be able to stay out of the Foundation's grasp? And if they're caught . . . what will become of them?
