Tanjiro and Kanao were in a happy healthy relationship, that was until Kanao slowly fell out of love with Tanjiro, and broke it off, leaving Tanjiro confused and heartbroken. However when it was rumored that Kanao was slowly trying to see someone else a little, not so long later, he turned to Muichiro for help.

Muichiro was Tanjiro's childhood friend, and he secretly had a crush on him. So he came up with an idea to get closer to Tanjiro, and make Kanao jealous,
And that was to be in a pretend relationship.
