I write short stories and poetry most days but I am currently working on a series of novellas about a pair of slackers who come back from the dead in a post-apocalyptic world and have to come to terms with the fact they must feed on the living to survive. Also, another novella about a girl with someone else living in her head, or is it just mental illness?
When I write short stories they start out from one situation or event and tend to escalate depending on the character's actions. Often the character will do or say something that will surprise me and lead the story off in another direction. One thing is certain, I rarely know what's going to happen at the end until I'm approaching it.
As for poetry, I try to write so that the meaning is immediately apparent. There is nothing more irritating than reading a poem and having to sweat over the meaning. Although, sometimes I've read a poem of mine and discovered a different meaning or a second layer to the one intended, which doesn't bother me if it works.
