When her father returned from work that evening, she asked him very demurely, "Papa, what does seeing mean?"
Her father froze, stunned. He tried to brush the question away, but Iris began to cry — great sobs racking her small chest — "Everyone sees blue, Papa, and I want to see blue too."
His heart shattered into a million pieces.
He knew he could not evade the conversation forever.
Iris, only five, was certain that her father was crying, though she could not see it. She felt it in the tremor of his hands, the heaviness of his breathing, and the warm drops that fell on her frock.
"Darling," he whispered, voice frayed, "there is a world outside — a world everyone can see."
In the smallest voice, she asked, "Why can't I?"
Her father pressed her hands to his face, unable to stop his tears.
"Does that make me sick, Papa?"
"No, sweetheart. You are not sick. The colours, the world... they can be felt and known. Just not in the way others do."
She frowned, lips trembling. "Will I get it later? Blue? Will I get to see blue later?"
He had no answer—only silence.
