@Asabus15 My hand shoots upward with the dagger. I try to dodge, but his grip shifts to my arm. I writhe in his grip, looking for any way out.

I stomp his foot. But he’s expecting it, and within a moment, he has me on the ground. If only he wasn’t so tall.

His grip’s stronger than mine. The dagger’s ripped out of my hand, and suddenly he has it to my neck.

            Fuck. How stupid are you?
            Given the situation, very.

I struggle in his grip before the cold of the blade reaches me. I can’t fight anymore.

            What can I negotiate for?

“Let me live and I’ll stick with you. You can use me as a shield. Take all my weapons. Do whatever you want, but let me live.”

The offer comes naturally, even if I’m gasping. Both of us still get something.

He narrows his eyes, deep blue like the sea, but churning with worry. A smile plays on his lips even as he heaves. “You’re still at my mercy.”

            I’ve lost.

Miss Athena chuckles. I know without looking the proud smile she saves for such moments. “He’s right. Good job. Victor, Apollo. Now Cassidy, what did you learn?”

“To always stay on my guard”, I say as the world returns from static. “And to always escape after the match ends.”

Both old lessons. Both ones I should remember.

Apollo still hasn’t moved, pinning me down. “You’ve won now, you know,” I huff. “You don’t need to stay like this.”

He nods, that stupid smile still on his lips. The little bastard. “I like winning.” I know it’s all he can do to not panic right now.

“Who would’ve guessed?” I deadpan as he gets off. Amazing. Now there’s dirt in my hair.

His company patches up the sting of losing quite well. Four years ago, I would’ve driven myself to the ground to beat him. Funny how much fun I can have with him now.

Maybe that’s part of why we’re best friends. Assuming our positions with the other trainees, I wonder if I’ll still have a best friend tomorrow. Or if he’ll have me.

@Asabus15 Chapter 1

            “Match over. Victor, Cassidy”

Mentor Selene’s sharp voice cuts through the distant roaring of the sea miles above our heads. No one cross talks in front of the victor of the sixteenth Hunger Games.

The thrill of my victory is dampened by anxiety. Ordinarily, beating Apollo is my favorite pastime. But with tomorrow so close, I’m afraid it’s a prophecy. That he’ll end up this way, unarmed and on the ground, and it won’t just be in training. It’s not until my head spins that I realize I’m not breathing.

He’s going to die. I can’t escape it. He’s going to die like her.

Mentor Selene’s back obscures his face from my gaze. But it’s easy enough to see that pitch black hair, that golden tan skin in my nightmares, bloody and broken and gone forever. Just like my father. Just like her.

She finishes her private session with him, pacing on the soft soil of the forest arena. Ready to begin the customary analysis.

“Identify your error, Apollo. Where do you think you erred?”

“That I lost?”, he sarcastically shoots, pulling me back to the present. His eyes meet hers, a steady resolve in them that never seems to fade. I’ve had nightmares of the day where it does, and they’ve only ever pointed to tomorrow.

Her pointed glare puts him in place almost instantly. “Just a joke. Let me think. I took too long to incapacitate her, and I didn’t try to negotiate.”

He’s sure in every word he says. I ignore the ache in my chest. We both want the other down, that’s the job right now.

            She pressed further. “And?”

It takes him a second. You forgot to place a threat, a wager, give me any reason to not want you gone.

He parodies my thought, almost exactly as I’d thought it. Mentor Selene nods, finally satisfied. “Precisely. Now–”

He lunges. Before I can think, his hand is on my waist, turning my frame.
