jhunjhunwala obtained his PhD in Food and Resource Economics from University of Florida at an age of 23 years. He was given Nachiketa Honour in 2002 by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his outstanding contribution to economic journalism.He started living in Uttarakhand in 2003 and built himself a house on the banks of the Alaknanda River.He got involved in the conservation of River Ganga, of which Alaknanda is a tributary by opposing the construction of hydropower projects on the Holy River.
