A black room. Nothing in sight. Where had her vision gone? Nothing. Just an empty, sucking whorl of darkness, shrouded in mystery.
She tried to move. No progress. It’s like her limbs have been severed, out of her body, with not a trace of pain.
Anesthetic? She thought. The haze of her mind suggested a drug-induced stupor, brought to a piercing level of dull headache. Her whole body ached, but not from the drug. She felt tight, tiny ropes, like strands of hair, wrapping her entire body in woven silk. It fits better than any artist could have painted it on – a cocoon made to imprison.
She heard voices. Murmuring whispers, not much more than breathing. Ominous words echoed in whirlpools deep inside her mind.
“The target’s awake.”
“When to commit?”
“The Menidzher said tomorrow.”
Menidzher? These people are Russian. Why abduct her, she didn’t know.

But she felt it was something to do with her origin.
Her name was Moonlight. Unusual, yes, but fitting. Her hair was as silver as the moon itself, shining, sparkling white. So silver that it’s almost white. The only possibility for this… would be more intriguing. Not to normal people. But for scientists with malice. Only the rarest species of kitsune have sparkling hair… but that was an extremely little-known fact. For generations of human civilization, the genus of kitsune has stayed hidden. All in very dangerous areas where humans don’t want to go. A tunnel underneath the riverbed of lake Natron, a place where water eats bone, with a high possibility of collapsing. Or a covered volcano “bubble” 2500 meters from the main bowl, hazardous for its chance to break open and spew its deadly lava load, inside to the community of kitsune.
By pure chance, one had a life with a human… and there comes Moonlight. Because her father escaped as soon as he learned her mother was pregnant, she never knew about the hidden kind until she one day woke up as a silver fox. Also it was luck that she found out how to change back, but the knowledge damaged her life with lies and betrayal.
Finding herself here today would mean what? A broken secret? Or death?
