Something happened to my mother. I turned myself inside out for three years trying to make a better life for her. I failed. Now she is languishing away in a disgusting nursing home.
I coped by watching movies. My favorites - science fiction and film noir. I watched all the movies based on comic books as they came out. I loved Bucky Barnes right off. There he was, right out of the film noir, and in a science-fiction movie! He is the best character ever.
In an interview Joe Russo said 'Bucky has no future.' That got a rise out of me. I was upset because it may be the truth. Was Bucky so damaged, so messed up, that it would be impossible for him to have a life? Then I thought of our real soldiers - soldiers that are paralyzed after their sixth tour of duty. Can anyone recover from that? I couldn't take it.
"Oh yeah - you want to bet?" I yelled at Russo. "Bucky is going to have a future because I'm gonna give him one." And so - I wrote The Three Stigmata of Bucky Barnes.
I succeeded in giving him everything.
