Two hundred kilometres north of Lima is a recently excavated archaeological site known as Caral - a city that had about 3000 people and is carbon dated to about 5000 years ago! In fact, Caral is just one of the many cities of the same vintage that are collectively being called the Norte Chico civilization.

CynthiaClampitt

Yes, I'm familiar with the work being done at Caral. Fascinating.

Have you done any traveling in south america? Peru, in particular, fascinates me. I discovered recently that it had one of the oldest civilizations in the world.

CynthiaClampitt

I have traveled a fair bit in Ecuador, but have not yet made it to Peru. I have studied far more than I have visited, however.

As for ancient civilizations, nothing in South America comes close to the antiquity of the civilizations of the Fertile Crescent, but it is still remarkable how sophisticated some of South America's early civilizations were.

Hi, Cynthia

I didn't realize you were a member of Wattpad, either. It's wonderful to see former members and authors from Red Room.

I agree, Jules. Sorry to lose Red Room, but great to see folks from there pop up here. It will be interesting to see how we all benefit from the merger.

Just started reading your Iceland piece...you're from Chicgao?! My wife is from Beverly! We try to go there often...all three of us, Wife, son and I, are total Field Museum junkies.

          Great to meet you!

CynthiaClampitt

Delighted to meet you as well, Bruce. I'm from the NW suburbs, but I do know where Beverly is -- and Field Museum (which is awesome). Glad to know some of my stuff is getting you itching for travel. It's an amazing world out there.
