I realize I had another point I didn't expand on, and that's loss or gain of libido due to physical attraction or repulsion. However, as I don't know much about the science of this, I'm going to move on.
So you brought up animals also having a sense of emotion– grief, excitement, fear, etc. This makes me wonder if animals, for all that we've evolved and adapted beyond them, might be better off than us being able to feel emotion, but probably without the same abstract concepts that humans create and consider.
No real way to find out though, I guess.
On a side note, for some reason whenever I read your original message, I keep going "haven't you heard that I'm the new cancer, I've never looked better and you can't stand it,". Which doesn't make sense because it wasn't stuck in my head at the time, it's not the same number of syllables, and it's not all that similar a line.
