Can't pay ENOUGH emphasis on how MUCH representation matters in media.
As an Autistic person, seeing Donatello from ROTTMNT be represented as a positive autism rep... I feel so validated.
His autism isn't shown as something so bad or good... It's so normalized! Also how his family actually adjusts to it rather than 'fixing' it is such a hope providing thing. They understand that he has his own way of communication. He is different...yet he communicates!
They haven't made him 'childish' and shown him as a 'cold' person. I myself display low empathy. I can't feel stuff that well when shared but I have the compassion to not be a bitch to people who open up to me (i try my best to console them even though i may not understand their feelings best). Donnie has shown it so well.
Just because ASD havers can't show empathy well, that doesn't mean we don't care about those around us. Donnie included his own family's needs in his inventions (i do that in my choices too), he has cared for his own people... Of course he has had crash outs and been less empathetic, but he cares!
They haven't shown his ASD like something that holds him back or helps him extraordinarily, no... They made it so natural.
Plus he wasn't babied or shown as a bad person.
I love Donnie so much.
